CoolCatBad
Proxomitron is the most effective, though probably the most complex, ad blocking proxy available. My first attempts at the configuration of this app were rather hopeless, but luckily many pre-fabricated config files are now readily accessible. First, get ProxN45j.zip and unzip it to a a folder anywhere, but called "Proxy" or similar for easy recognition. http://www.proxomitron.info/files/download/ProxN45j.zip Then get these config files and unzip them into the same folder http://www.geocities.com/sidki3003/prox/pr...-2005-02-22.zip This site has the best info on Proxomitron, in my opinion, and you should return for updates. http://www.geocities.com/sidki3003/prox-news.html Now, open Internet Options in Control Panel at Connections. Click Settings. Click "Use a Proxy Sever", Click "Advanced". In the HTTP settings, enter localhost as Proxy address and 8080 as port. You don't need to change other settings there. That's it for IE, the same is true for Mozilla and Opera browsers, but accessible through their respective Options dialogs. Start the program, and start browsing. You will notice various changes....apart from freedom from ads and improved load-time. You have features such as per-site Cookie clearing, change stylesheet and toggle Flash. You can right-click the system tray icon and access many options, including sites to bypass the proxy filter.
frease
I'll like to add another great link for Proxomitron here: http://www.jd5000.net/ The configs found on thsi site are really great.

CoolCatBad
When started, Proxomitron loads the default.cfg. To load the above config, right-click the system tray icon and go to Load Config File- sidki_xxxx-xx-xx.ptron. Good idea to remove default.cfg and rename "sidki_xxxx-xx-xx.ptron" to default.cfg. Also, clear browser cache before first use.
Magician
Another good place to look is the Proxo Forums which cover a lot of stuff for Proxo and many many helpful people to get you going. My particular Proxomitron set up at the moment has all internet traffic being passed to Proxomitron (for html stripping - ads etc) then onto Proxify (for converstion to SOCKS 4) and then onto TOR which ensures all traffic coming out of my computer passes through at least three different TOR servers before access the request. Ensures near total anonimity and streamlined webpages :-) Check out here for how to set that up and here for what TOR is. Very sweet :)

42n81
Thanks for the info. I used to use Proxomitron back in Win98 and loved it but thought it was discontinued a few years back. Glad to see it's still going strong. I'll certainly revisit it.
Largesse
Thanks for the great info. I've tried Proxomitron before but gave up due to its complexity. btw, I've reshacked into Proxomitron a couple of cool stoplight tray icons. One for Active and one for Bypass. PM if anyone wants. iron2000
I've tried Proxo before but I don't like having another program on just to block ads and stuff. But its a nice program, very flexible. (You can create a filter that helps you to fill in your user name, hehe lazy me)
CoolCatBad
Historical note: Scott R. Lemmon, the creator of Proxomitron passed away last year. There is an heartfelt obituary at CastleCops security you may be interested to read- http://computercops.biz/article-5228-nested-0-0.html Many who deride freeware fail to note that it is simply the expression of the individual's talent that is the motive force.
