Hey guys this might be a stupid idea on a huge forum like this becuse of the cpu cycles it would use but anywho ive seen on some forums instead of having the post count they have a word count so the people that just post 1 word dont really get as big of count as someone that actually types up a huge answer

PS im not someone that cares about post count nor do i think others do :s but if some people do i guess it might stop some idiots from doing 1 wordered posts

i think we shuld abolish the ability for regular users to see their post count. if no one can see, it is less of an issue and there will be more quality posts instead of one worded posts which just say "thanks, congrats, haha, lol, etc".

just my 2 cents, but i think this issue has already been played out on this board.

My suggestion from another thread still stands:

Post count lock all of "general and off topic discussion". Post counts then would only increase for posts in the other more important sections of the forums.

As it stands, there have been over 1,100,453 posts in the general and off topic discussion, accounting for a quarter of the forums total posts. Post Count-Lock this, less people spamming (that really is the only word to describe what happens under there) to increase their post count, and it would encourage members to post in the other sections which make Neowin what it is.

Post count should not even be shown!

But if there has to be something...then.....

Users should have rating, according to their helpfuless.

Fellow user can ask a question, and then once replied to, with good solution. the first poster should be able to give the replier a rating.

I for one think that the post count is good. Admittedly there is spamming and I can't stand it in the jokes section where people will click on every thread and just quick post 'lol'. Gets them another 25, yippee.

Who gives a.......(insert expletive of choice here)

Also I don't think that the other sections are 'what makes neowin what it is' I think the cmmunity make neowin what it is and the ability to share with your community. Recently I had a question on what happens when a PSU dies. I could have posted this in the 'hardware hangout' but I thought as it would only need one or two people (to confirm) to write a couple of sentences it wasn't really worth it.

I don't see why good neowinians like that should be denied their post count just because I chose to post in a section that is supposedly full of spam.

Maybe an anti post count, so there was a little tick box and mods could actually do something useful and go through all the spam threads tick the little box and make those people get -5 post counts for posting spam.

Or a 'usefulness' section as well, just under where it says post count it could say 'usefulness' and go from -10 to +10. I believe that people would actually try to obtain their high usefulness count and I don't think anybody would be stupid enough to attempt to get the lowest usefulness count.

I reckon I'd get an 8 out of 10 for this :) and I'd keep my post count as it isn't spam :p

a word count would penalize people for posting concise answers (e.g. "how do i remove the recycle bin?" "tweakui.") and reward people who post unnecessarily long answers (e.g. "how do i remove the recycle bin?" "oh, well, it's really quite easy. all you have to do is download tweakui and you can remove it.").

post count doesn't really matter here. it's really the quality of the posts that matters.

I've seen sites that work that way. The more content in your posts, the higher your "rank" or "rating". However, the loophole is to have a big quote in your post (:shifty:) and then a small response that you actually type yourself

Like it or not, Neowin forums are not Tech only. The GD and other 'off topic' areas have grown the most for Neowin lately, and thus, increases member count. People enjoy a site with this much flexibility. Penalizing them jsut because they post in a non-tech forum wouldn't make good sense.

People who post one word dont really get much out of the community, thats why you rarely see someone who types one word replies have a high post count. When i see someone post with a big post count, i dont use that as a messurment of how much i should respect them, i just think "oh they've posted alot" and nothing more. It works just fine the way it is :)

Or at least post count lock individual sections, like the Neowin milestones.

And that is true for about every forum that has a General Discussion section at their forums, most of the time that section has the most posts. And usually members have "more fun" posting in those sections, just my 2 cents.

    • I disagree; they come off very "bitchy" and "whiny". Make a great product and combine that with a great price (free) and people will come over to your side. Or build it and they will come as they say. Constantly trying to get attention by complaining all the time, will turn people off to your product.

    • Brave Browser 1.91.171 by Razvan Serea Brave Browser is a lightning-fast, secure web browser that stands out from the competition with its focus on privacy, security, and speed. With features like HTTPS Everywhere and built-in tracker blocking, Brave keeps your online activities safe from prying eyes. Brave is one of the safest browsers on the market today. It blocks third-party data storage. It protects from browser fingerprinting. And it does all this by default. Speed - Brave is built on Chromium, the same technology that powers Google Chrome, and is optimized for speed, providing a fast and responsive browsing experience. Brave Browser also features Brave Rewards, a system that rewards users with Basic Attention Tokens (BAT) for viewing opt-in ads. This innovative system provides an alternative revenue model for content creators and a way to support the Brave community. SlimBrave Neo takes all the good things about Brave and makes them even better by keeping everything clean, light, and privacy-focused. It removes the extra clutter, turns off features you might not need, and cuts down on anything that could slow you down or collect unnecessary data. Because it relies on simple settings and policies instead of modifying the browser itself, you still get full Brave compatibility—just in a smoother, lighter, and more privacy-friendly package. • Hi. As the title suggests, I can't access the forum on my phone. I'm using Edge on Android and when I try to navigate to the forum I get a "we value your privacy" popup and none of the buttons are clickable. It effectively stonewalls me from reading any forum content.
    • Honestly you're not wrong about AdGuard. Neowin frequently has lifetime license discounts for them and that's how I got my cheap family license a few years ago to run it on all my devices.
