@rezza : for me it' s more difficult to do a good dark desk , very good work :)

On my desk , for the rounded corner of the gnome panel I use a background ,

Right clic on gnome panel > Property > background.

And I do a background panel for each theme (with rounded corner)

Drag.

You might want to try creating a normal user and logging in as that, rather than running as root. By logging in as root day-to-day you've just lost 95% of the security advantages of running linux!
