[Definitive] Xbox 360 Thread

So does anyone know what sort of noise the 360 gives off?

Moore has said that it generally be quiter than the current Xbox. Plus, it has variable control fan speed. So when watching dvd movies or doing something that's not CPU intensive, it automatically slows down.

i dont know, but 2 of the 3 processors turn off when a DVD is being played to reduce the power being used, and i think something similar happends with the fans maybe slowing down or turning off? so... i guess thats the best i can answer w/o being right in front of it and actually knowing.

I never understood why companies didn't put in sound-proof material around these consoles.

It's called HEAT. It would fry the components if you would release a solid console with no ventalation holes

Anyway the 360 has plenty of "radio wave protection" by regulations now, guess it will reduce the sound somewhat.

Oh...yeah...you make a good point there actually!

Can't you just have sound proofing material everywhere but where the holes are?

Negative, soundwaves and radiowaves are two different things. You can have a glass container that lets radio waves fly around like nothing but is virtually soundproof. Similarly you can have a sealed lead-coated container that will resonate and sound like it's amplifying sound but will stop radiowaves dead in their tracks. The two have nothing in common.

But that's not to say they didn't make the 360 more sound proofed?

They are not allowed to use lead anymore... It will be illegal in 2006 in Europe or something. Yet they must restrict radiation somehow.

It's a lot more silent than the original, expecially when you are watching movies it will shut down 2 of the cores and really slow down the fans.

Don't take things too literally, that was an easily relatable example to prove my point, about the subject at hand... it had nothing to do with the 360.

ANYWAYS

Yes there are plenty of other ways to block radiation. Infact, pretty much any electronic device nowadays is magnetically shielded. Look on the fine print on your TV, Hell even my calculator says it complys with radio transmission standards.

Illegal to use Lead in Europe, but Legal to use Marijuana in Denver...wth is this world coming to?

I don't know a lot about the drive the Xbox 360 uses, but is it true that it's not going to be an HD DVD drive? And thus the dvd's will be the same as we use now for games, and developers will have to skip on some of the graphical detail to fit it onto one disk?

If that is the case, then why is there a problem with the backawards compatibility?

And won't MS leaving the HD DVD drive out of the console shorten it's life span on the market, especially when the PS3 comes out with it's blu-ray drive? Surely they can't offer new consoles somewhere down the line and leave behind the customers who buy the first edition Xbox 360's due for release on 22nd Nov etc?

Sorry if all these Q's have been answered already but I don't have the time to search through 40 odd pages lol.

TIA

Yar no HD-DVD drive, and I think the hope was that it could easily upgraded when they finally release it.

Backwards compatibility was releated to the Xbox using an Nvidia GPU and this time around its a very different ATI one.

Games won't be released on HD-DVD.. which sucks I think, perhaps they'll change there mind about that.

I am working on a review of the 360 - next time i go to my friend's house (who is the son of a senior VP at msft (lucky b*st*rd), and therefore has one (lucky b*st*rd)) i will get some pictures and stuff... if you have any particular questions about it that you want me to probe people i know about, or particular pictures of parts, feel free to ask (I am not gonna open the case up though)...

They would never release a game that couldn't run on all 360s. The DVD drive in the 360 is not detachable like the hard drive, so it's not like they can just put out a new drive and people can upgrade if they want to. Because of that, there will never be an HD-DVD game, and I'd bet lots of money on that.
Support for video? Whether or not we will really need Media Center to stream our dvds/tv episodes.

586784552[/snapback]

You can just stick your DVDs right in the 360, so I don't see why you're so worried about streaming them over the network. But yes, Media Center will be required to stream video. Software may come out to solve that problem, but who knows.

I have like 90, and its just a pain switching between them, as they all sleep in my room, but I usually watch on the TV in the lounge, so they end up spread out all over the place, so my plan was to rip them all and share them on the network, let any computer watch them, gunna be alittle annoyed if I can't enjoy them on the biggest tv/sound system in the house. :p

    • Ocenaudio 3.19.3 by Razvan Serea Ocenaudio is a full featured, fast and easy to use audio and music editor. It is the ideal software for people who need to edit and analyze audio files without complications. Ocenaudio also has powerful features that will please more advanced users. To assist ocenaudio development, a powerful toolset of audio editing, analysis and manipulation called Ocen Framework was created. ocenaudio is also based on Qt framework, a well known library for cross-platform development. Cross-platform support ocenaudio is available for all major operating systems: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Native applications are generated for each platform from a common source, in order to achieve excelent performance and seamless integration with the operating system. All versions of ocenaudio have a uniform set of features and the same graphical interface, so the skills you learn in one platform can be used in the others. VST plugins support Ocenaudio supports VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plugins, giving its users access to numerous effects. Like the native effects, VST effects can use real-time preview to aide configuration. Real-time preview of effects Applying effects such as EQ, gain and filtering is an important part of audio editing. However, it is very tricky to get the desired result by adjusting the controls configuration alone: you must listen the processed audio. To ease the configuration of audio effects, ocenaudio has a real time preview feature: you hear the processed signal while adjusting the controls. The effect configuration window also includes a miniature view of the selected audio signal. You can navigate on this miniature view in the same way as you do on the main interface, selecting parts that interest you and listening to the effect result in real time. Multiselection for delicate editions To speed up complex audio files editing, ocenaudio includes multi-selection. With this amazing tool, you can simultaneously select different portions of an audio file and listen, edit or even apply an effect to them. For example, if you want to normalize only the excerpts of an interview where the interviewee is talking, just select them and apply the effect. Eficient edition of large files With ocenaudio, there is no limit to the length or the quantity of the audio files you can edit. Using an advanced memory management system, the application keeps your files open without wasting any of your computer's memory. Even in files several hours long, common editing operations such as copy, cut or paste happen almost instantly. Fully featured spectrogram Besides offering an incredible waveform view of your audio files, ocenaudio has a powerful and complete spectrogram view. In this view, you can analyze the spectral content of your audio signal with maximum clarity. Advanced users will be surprised to find that the spectrogram settings are applied in real time. The display is updated immediately when altering features such as the number of frequency bands, window type and size and dynamic range of the display.
