Nintendo Revolution.

Don't be an ass... Try RE4 and kill your hookers

If you try watching any images of Zelda, you'll know that your character is Link and why he doesn't have guns... I really don't know... Mabye because they don't have guns? Yes that must be it  :hmmm:

Come on man, I even quoted "mature". If anyone could take my last post seriously, I fear for our society.

I own a Nintendo DS. I don't own a Sony PSP. However, I have played the Sony PSP and I am glad I got the DS and not the PSP. Why?

PSP is too expensive, doesn't have enough variety in gaming, EXTREMELY LONG LOAD TIMES, etc.

I did pretty much grow up on Nintendo; I had (and I think I still have) an SNES, an N64, a GameCube, a Game Boy, a Game Boy Color, a Game Boy Advance, a Game Boy Advance SP, and a Nintendo DS. They're all amazing.

Before getting the DS though I really looked into both systems; if you're looking at just style, then the PSP might be for you... but I love Nintendo's style of games, and the touch screen adds so much gameplay value to the system. You people who say it's a gimmick probably haven't even given the DS a chance. The touchscreen, microphone, etc. are the features that make the DS actually more of a fun game system to play on; it adds a whole new dimension of gameplay. No longer are you just forced to smash buttons with your thumbs. That might be fun, but it only goes so far.

I was unsure myself before I got my DS... would it be worth it in the long run? Would I get bored quickly? etc. . . . But in the end I made an excellent choice. I got a great deal on the system and there are great games available and more coming out later this year. I have the Metroid Demo that came with the DS, and I have Super Mario 64 DS, Yoshi Touch & Go, and Polarium, all of which are excellent games. I am also looking forward to Kirby Canvas Curse, Meteos, Nanostray, etc.

What's in the future for the PSP? Oh. Yeah. More sports games, racing games, and violent, fighting games. PS2 games remade for the PSP.

Although the PSP has good graphics, that doesn't make the game. And think about the future of video games. What will happen when game consoles reach literally photo-/real-life-quality graphics? Then there will be no room for improvement. What will be left to innovate upon? Then those companies that can't think of something will lose. Eventually. Nintendo is doing great with their revolutionary new game consoles... they know what's good in the long run.

Oh yeah, and yes, Nintendo is profiting from the DS, whereas Sony loses from the PSP.

I am not going to argue what consoles have better graphics. This argument could go on forever and we'll never ever know which has the best. But nintendo did show its potential in Resident Evil.

Characters from the mushroom kingdom/zelda are what my friends and i were grown up on. People do argue that thats what keeps Nintendo alive. Maybe it is? I don't know. But when i play mario games with my friends. Because it has mario in the title they arn't afraid to try it. when i pick up a mario game theres a 80% chance I will like it. Mario Party is a game everybody would like. Although it isn't graphicly superior in any way possible. Its just a fun game to pick up and play. Graphics mean nothing if you got a crappy game. (that just being said i would like to mention that many people are tired of mario party and want something new. seeing that mario party hasn't changed much. My friends and I just love Mario party though!).

As for new ways of playing the games. I am welcoming the idea that they are trying to put out. (Nothing was as exciting when i seen N64 with 4 controllers :D ). When i play games its mainly 4 player games. I believe Nintendo mastered multiplayer better than Microsoft (in this generation at least. Remember, most of my friends dislike HALO.) Nintendo (I don't know if that many people notice.. but i just realized it in the last couple of months) trys to stay away from split-screen (super smash brothers is one big screen. Zelda four swords. Donkey Konga. Mario party is not always slitscreen). most games you share one screen. although there is exceptions such as Mario Kart and Metroid Prime 2. Most multiplayer titles share one screen.

been gaming for 13 years and graphics just one day stoped impressing me. Graphics can add a whole new dimension to the game. But unless they are used right. your best off to go back and re-write everything.

Mature games. yea, they can be cool. But why do they need to be in the gaming? We were all fine back in the NES days and SNES days without mature games. and i would argue those were among the best games ever. I can't explain it. But.. lets say, would people get upset if mature titles were completly banned from the market? I wouldn't. however There are a few Mature titles that i do enjoy. (mainly consist of metal gear solid and half-life. )

I guess what i hope for in the next generation. is a better multiplayer selection. I want games that can be played by 5 years olds to 50 years olds. (donkey konga is a excellent example). I hope to see microsoft compete in that area. (the only multiplayer game i know people play on the x-box is halo. and thats rated Mature) If this revolution will bring in a new way of playing games. I hope it also applies to multiplayer. Or I would be dissapointed. I want to clear up one thing though. I like multiplayer. But i dislike online. When i play my friend I'd rather be in the room with him/her. My idea? Wireless controllers that support up to 8 people. Playing Mario Party with 8 people would be fun. (as long as the mini games try to stay away from split screen.. and that is done all the time.).

that was my little rant. My thought on what direction video games are leaning into. I would rather sacrifice graphics over gameplay any day. I hope people take my thoughts into serious consideration. if you gave me 30 minutes of your time i think I could make you like Nintendo.

EDIT: I didn't phrase my sentences correctly. sorry about that  . I feel like i got a period every second word.

Discution about Nintendo's past glory time is pointless, it won't affect the next Revolution. Right now we don't even have a clue of what's going to be, or what kind of concept Iwata is preparing.

It's obvious that Nintendo's Fan will follow it to it's end or may be it will lead them to another glory time of gaming. But something is very clear, what we understand about gaming is pretty much to it's end. We are moving into HD gaming wich is takes the graphic level to a photorealist stage. The XboX 360 and PS3 are all going that direcction, including PCs gaming. But still it is the same kind of gaming we are facing: FPS, RPG, Simulators, platforms, RTS etc... and latetly MMORPG.

But call me negative or not, giat company do fall! Sega did, SNK did, Panasonic did . I guess nothing last forever. And I really don't see a bright future for Nintendo with it's current status, like I said in my last post it is really not wise to involve into the Soft and Hard design both at the same time! cuz u end up support yourself at the end. And if any of them fail [soft or hard] u will have a lot of trouble.

That's why keeping big game developers like EA, Capcom, Squarenix...etc.. is so damn important. Sony knew that from the begining so they will do what ever it take to buy them off. And XboX... I think someday we will all end up with a XboX in our home... Why? because of Microsft's "truly" unlimited funding [not the kind of Sony's]. It's just who has the BIGGER muscle behind, it's just simple like that.

I know some ppl won't agree with me cuz they will say: "Hey! it isn't a contest of who has more money, it is about of who has the best game titles and platforms." I'm agree with that, I really do. But DON'T FORGET! MONEY BUY TALENTS! and by that I mean everything is for sale, after all it's all about business.

So this is what I see for Nintendo's future:

To be success, which they must! they have to do the following for their console:

1) Come up with a really true idea, a totally new concept.

2) Capture more adult audience.

3) Capture more Publisher [which is the most difficult task of all]

4) Don't relaese a new Media format [this part has conflict with the 3rd part cuz, publisher won't be happy if their game can be pirated, and of course it will damage Nintendo's own game titles income] "no loose no wining" admitted or not piracy it is a serious problem that can't be resolved BUT you can use it like Sony did ;)

As far I can see this is the only way keep Nintendo fighting. Failing any of those task Nintendo will be in seriuos trouble! Of course, assuming that Nintendo DO have a Impressive Original Concept for it's next Console.

As always, a lot of ppl won't be agree with this I will say PLEASE!!! GET REAL! facing giats like Sony and specially Microsoft is very expensive! Specially considering that Nintendo isn't at it's prime time, and It did realese some platform that wasnt enough to keep up with the market. :pinch:

I don't see how the touchscreen is a 2 minute wonder... I find it to be a very good controller. FPS games especially works very well on it. Developers have barely scratched the surface when it comes to using the touchscreen and the mic. And saying it's a gimmic I really don't understand the point there...

585836581

Its a horrible method of controlling, i have a pda and using the touchscreen controls is awful, ive had a hold of the NDS and it seemed tacky and horrible. Without the touchscreen the NDS is basically GBA SP 1 and a half, they added touchscreen as a gimmick to sell it.

Let's just say, I'm not a Zelda fan.

585836430

Rouge Squadron series, Metroid Prime series, Super Monkey Ball series... all exclusives on these next-gen consoles. Prime examples of the Mario-less lineup.

You people make no sense.  Why should they bow out of the console market?

The ironic thing is that Xbox has posted losses for all but one quarter, the Sony PS2 makes money, but that profit is cancelled because it is too small and Sony's other divisions have massive losses, yet the GameCube is the only one that makes a profit -- and Nintendo is the one dying and should quit making consoles?!

Man this is ridiculous, alot of you need to check reality and get your heads out of the clouds.

585836928

Well said.

IMO, the DS is great, but wayyyyy too expensive for me to justify at this time. The Metroid demo I tried was very close to the GC versions in control, which was a shock to me.

So this is what I see for Nintendo's future:

To be success, which they must! they have to do the following for their console:

1) Come up with a really true idea, a totally new concept.

2) Capture more adult audience.

1. So what are the new concepts that the Xbox 360 or PS3 are coming up with? All I see so far is hardware upgrades. Had the original Xbox or PS2 even come up with new concepts? Why does Nintendo have to be the only one that can be innovative? Isn't it about time that MS and Sony do something new for a change?

2. They don't need to capture a mature audience. It is already well known that MS and PS3 are fighting for mature gamers for some reason. If the mature male gamers count for 50% of people why can't Nintendo go after the other 50%? Its simple economics and business practice, let the other two duke it out while Nintendo gets the other half. Look at what Maxis did with the Sims. They made the game appeal to female population and people that were never into PC gaming at all. Then look what happened, the Sims turned out to be the biggest selling PC game of all time. Even Nintendo has hinted with the Revolution that they want to make things simpler to get people who are alieniated by gaming because controls are getting too complex. And that could be a large chunck of the world population that MS or PS3 can never have because they are just limiting their focus for mature male gamers. There are alot more people in the world then the 14-25 year old male gamers that are currently the majority to buy games, why not go after the untapped resource of everyone else outside that category? That is what Maxis did with the Sims.

3. Companies have to pay a crapload to get a game licensed on their system or even more to get an exclusive game. Nintendo is an ingame publisher and developer, why do they need to spend insane amounts of money to get people on board, when they can make or publish games themselves for less of a cost.

4. Why should they release games on a format that can be copied easily?! The GameCube format practically stopped piracy with its format. Now you want it to make a format like Sony or MS that can be easily copied so they lose hundreds of millions each year in lost software sales?! I doubt the amount of consolses bought by people who want to pirate games does not offset the amount of games they pirate. For example, a PS2 or Xbox costs $150, a person could pirate 3 games and they will have already pirated equal to what they paid for the console ($50 * 3 games = $150). After that Sony, MS, the developer, and publisher start to lose money with each game pirated after that. If you were a business analyst for one of those companies and you told them to make a format that was easily piratable because you think it will sell more systems that way, you would be fired so fast. People are going to pirate more games then what they paid for the console.

I don't know why you say "To be success, which they must! they have to do the following for their console". Is not the main goal of a company to make a profit with the products they make? Is Nintendo not making a profit with each console, handheld, software, and the royalties they make off TV shows and movies (Pokemon, Mario Brothers, etc.)? They are making a profit, which in many business books is considered a success.

Supposedly the secrets has been leaked.

This is the second time I heard about this rumor. I read that the other day, but I am a little confused by "3D". I do not think they are talking about the 3D we think of as wearing blue and red glasses. A few months ago Nintendo supposedly patented a new way to view things in a game. It had something to do with how you focus things on the screen. I will see if I can find the article.

Edit: I found one article on it, but there was a better one on IGN: How Stuff Works

Fixation Points?

Nintendo has a patent on some technology that most believe will be applied to the Revolution. In short, this new feature will change the way we see games.

In video games, there are designated fixation points. These points are particular objects that the player's eyes are drawn to because of their relevance to the game. For instance, in a sports game it would be the ball. The problem is that games are becoming more and more complex. This requires more fixation points, splitting the gamer's focus and making the overall visual experience of a game so complex that it has the potential to drain the fun right out of it.

In pouring over the patent application, one learns that Nintendo's new technology will create a frame and a virtual frame. The idea is basically that designated objects that have priority in the game space will always be featured prominently in the display despite the line of site. This happens when the object moves into the virtual frame. The image will be "deformed" to always include designated objects and provide greater detail and depth of field without having to zoom, or alter camera angles abruptly. Though this is all speculation, it would seem this new feature would be relatively transparent to the user. It would simply facilitate a clearer, and overall more enjoyable, visual experience for gamers. As with all of this stuff, we'll just have to wait and see.

Err.. It's a great controller. It's unusual at first but when you get the feel of it, everything feels natural and easy. You should really look up on the word gimmic until next time. The touchscreen is not a gimmic. It's a new way of controlling games and it works great, especially in FPS games. It get's better each time I boot up Metroid in SP and MP.

Just wait a few month and you'll see what the DS is capable of. You'll see things you never dreamed of doing a few years back.

Pet peeve time; get the spelling right people! This is unacceptable on websites like howstuffworks. The word is "poring".

585843172

ok now :pinch: calm down. "pouring" is right, its not a spelling error, just the wrong word to use poring is better :D

ex. pouring water
