You, know, i know it. We all see it from time to time. yes i am talking about the "Server is too busy to handle your requests" screen. And to tell you the truth i am getting sick and tired of it.

Main reason:

When i wanna provide some help in the hardware hangout, i can't because "the server is too busy to handle your requests." this gets tiresome, i am seeing more and more subscribers everyday ( or is it just me  ) I seem to be getting this error more often as of late. WHY? i don't know, maybe it's just me thinking that or it really is getting bogged down more and more often, I know neowin wants to grow and this community is the best on the internet.

So I'm thinking.. ( and bear with me here) either lockdown the forums to only registered members. (this i dont myself wholeheartedly agree with but i figure what the hay ;) )

OR: can we donate some more funds to help remedy this? I know Neowin uses a boatsized load of bandwidth per month and on Sundays i know that, that is "Backup day"

I personally wouldn't mind at all to help in donating more funds to do my part in getting rid of this problem.

what do you guys think?

Lockdown the forums for only registered members? or donate extra to help

I go with the second choice. :)

What about if there was another type of subscriber group where they pay X of amount money a month or year and they get put on a different server to the current main ones, the "subscriber server" and the money the subscriber pays goes to maintaining the "subscriber server" ? and therefore subscribers won't have to deal with server busy messages as they are on a totally different server.

thats the last thing neowin needs. to divide its content amongst subscribed and unsubscribed members.

Just add another server, seeing how neowin already have 2 http servers i think, just put a 3rd in for subscribers, and they use the same database server

what about getting a donation account setup, and upgrade to a hell of a lot better server..

(cough timdorr)

as ive suggested in the past let people donate a small sum of money, for those who cannot afford the 13 dollars, have a donater tag or something similar to the subcsriber tag. i appreciate the admins for not litering neowin with outrageous ads, but i think the only way to free up the server usage is to slender down, more so, the forums for non registered members. i understand that sigs and such are disabled but maybe going a step furter. maybe another version of neowin will be less forum-like, for non members, and more similar to a news site. i dont know if this can be done with IVB but know it can be accomplished with vbulletin, but i know neowin is proud of its accomplishment of being the largest IVB on the net so i doubt they would do such a thing.

k well an upgraded server should be looked into.

585833740

It's not the hardware of the server, they jsut upgraded hardware not too long ago. and added another, It's the bandwidth thats slowing neowin down. I think uploading images should be a no no, maybe that will help. with site like imageshack.us, imagebarrel.com and theres more and more popping up everyday theres no reason to upload images and add to the congestion.

just one server is only 250-300 dollars a month (and they have 3).

585833844

is that directed at me?

Just another point to my other little point, just say theres a seperate group where you pay $5 a month to be put on a seperate server. There would be atleast 50 people out of the 91,648 registered members that would do that (including me), thats already $250 a month. And also that server wont have to be pimped out.

You can throw 50 servers at the problem, won't mean a thing if there is a bottleneck connection side. It's all about badnwidth.

I agree with rip on this: as much as the images allow everyone's individuality to be expressed, I'd rather bann sig images, etc., to make the most efficient use of the hardware and bandwidth the site has.

Surely bandwidth has nothing to do with serverload

And you could have 50 servers all load balanced to distribute the load efficiently, each having their own connection.

Sigs are off site though. So that wouldn't matter. Some avatars however are on site.

As well as attached images. Like mine ^. /me Hypocrite.

It's members like this that slow down neowin

I';m not talking about banning sigs, since there hotlinked unlike avatars that can be uploaded im talking about pics, uploading them need to be stopped or something

I PM'ed that guy and told him that its his fault that neowin is falling to peices.

No Flaming, Personal attacks such as flaming, instigating "flame bait", verbal abuse or mocking of members in forum posts are not tolerated at Neowin. Such posts will be deleted on sight and moderated accordingly. If you are a long standing member, act like one. Lead by example and assist other newer members rather then attacking them. We look upon our veteran members to use this opportunity to teach the newer members the appropriate way to use these message boards.

Let's start blaming people for Neowin's supposed slowness

Your high post count would increase the size of the database more than his hotlinking to images on other servers

By the way, I have not seen a server is busy error in well over 6 months now.

If you wouldve posted in this thread at the time that pic was originally posted you would've seen taht it was earth sized. I wasnt attacking him i was pointing the fact out tha huge images contribute in slowing neowin down, Hes resized and hotlinked;))

And just because you haven't got the message doesn't mean that i haven't

: : : : : : : :

I always assumed most images are hosted offsite, apart from some avatars...

I will have to take a closer look at IPB to see if you can force unregistered users to view the 'Lite' version.

But does anyone know whats causing the problem, bandwidth, or the internals of the Servers ?

    • Snap Inc. launches new SPECS augmented reality glasses (for 'just' $2,195) by Aditya Tiwari Image: Snap Inc. Smartglasses powered by augmented reality are the latest fashion because the smartphone market is slowly reaching saturation. Snap Inc. announced its latest AR-powered smartglasses, called SPECS, that aim to strike a middle ground between underpowered AI glasses and heavy headsets you can't wear all the time. Available in two sizes, Snap SPECS are made from high-performance Swiss TR90 polymer and feature removable inserts to support prescription lenses. Its 47mm model weighs about 132g; the bigger 52mm model weighs 136g. Snap Inc has been spreading the word about the new glasses for a while now. Earlier this year, it even spun off its smart glasses team into a subsidiary called Specs Inc. Its proprietary LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) display delivers a 51-degree field of view and 16 million colors. Snap says the device gives the feel of a 24-inch desktop monitor when you're working, and of a 115-inch home cinema screen placed about 10 feet away when watching a movie. A pair of custom stereo speakers and 6x high-SNR MEMS microphones are built into the temples of the smartglasses to deliver open-ear audio while you cast a screen, stream content, open a whiteboard, or collaborate with others. Snap Inc. patted itself on the back, saying the smartglasses don't need tethering or a puck to connect to a computer. Under the hood, SPECS draw its power from two Snapdragon processors: one for computer vision and another for running Lenses. The device supports fast hand tracking, low latency, and responsive interactions that help digital content feel anchored in the real world, according to the company, which claims that SPECS can "deliver 7-millisecond motion-to-photon latency." The smartglasses offer up to four hours of battery life on a single charge while providing AI assistance, Bluetooth notifications, Lenses, audio/video playback, and more. The battery life could jump to 20 hours of mixed use when the charging case is included. Image: Snap Inc. You can view and interact with AR Lenses anchored directly to the physical world around you, and an on-board AI assistant uses the camera to see what's around to answer questions or provide real-time help with tasks. Snap Inc. noted that it filed more than 7,000 patents during the development of SPECS. It's trying to build the required digital ecosystem around the smartglasses, and said that developers have already published hundreds of Lenses for SPECS. Moreover, their electrochromic lenses use the same technology available in Boeing 787 Dreamliner windows, enabling them to shift from clear to tinted in just 10 seconds when you walk out of your house. Snap SPECS are now available for pre-order on the official website with a $2,195 price tag ($200 refundable deposit). The smartglasses are expected to ship in the US, UK, and France during the Fall this year.
    • Sound Booster 1.13 Build 575 by Razvan Serea Increase volume on your laptop. Boost the volume of even very quiet speakers. Raise volume above maximum. Letasoft Sound Booster can be used as an extra amplifier when the volume of the program you are listening to is too low for comfortable listening and you feel that your PC’s speakers can produce a louder sound. This can be the case when the audio or video has been recorded at the level below normal. Or, for example, when the other person’s microphone you are talking to on Skype, is not working properly. There can be a plenty of other reasons why the sound is being too quiet and there is not much you can do about it except buy external speakers. Sound of any application that is being played in the system can be amplified up to 500%. Letasoft Sound Booster can raise volume of programs like web browsers, on-line communication software (Teams, Discord, Zoom), any kind of media player or games. Simply put, volume of virtually any program that can play any sound in PC, can be boosted to a comfortable level with Letasoft Sound Booster. You can control current volume with the pop-up slider from the system tray. Alternatively, you can assign system-wide hot keys for increasing and decreasing, and use them when you need to adjust volume Letasoft Sound Booster constantly monitors current gain level and prevents samples from clipping, thus reducing all major sound distortions. • I own these and the normal QuietComfort ones from Bose. The QC are amazing and I want to love these, but for the life of me, I have a terrible time getting them attached to my ears.
