I voted No but meant yes. That is what you get for not paying attention. The stars don't mean as much to me as Join date. I usually have more tolerance and try harder to help out a member that has been here longer. I also try to help the fellow subscribers more. May not be right but I'm proud to be a supporter of Neowin and think the ones that subscribe are more loyal and deserve more condsideration.

If they're removed, why would anyone bother posting?

No, they shouldn't be removed. Why would you/anyone want them removed in the first place?

As stated in the other thread, many members rely on "post counts" for credibility, or for some an "e-penis". I think removing this barricade would help newer members integrate into the community better, rather than allowing all the "Post ###### and 1337 people with 10,000 posts plus" to either spam threads with extremely repetitive replies such as "thanks for the info!", or to degrade others simply because their post count isn't up to their standards.

EDIT:

First give everyone a reason why they should be reset.

I do not mean "reset" I mean ELIMINATED COMPLETELY.

As for join dates, those are not covered in this thread- this is simply about post counts and stars.

i feel they should, not only do those stars encourage useless one word posts but they are totally useless graphics that only clutter up the page and eat bandwidth from the server and 56k users.

Yet another good reason. I have yet to hear a convincing argument from the other point of view. Anyone care to give a good reason as to why post counts should stay? (Because it grows my e-penis isnt one tards  )

I voted "yes", but I see I am one of a very few...

Post counts tend to promote unproductive repeated one-word posts or all-smiley posts. If they were gone, then people would not be motivated for "more starz!!11!oneone", and be more likely to post only when they had something meaningful to say.

Plus, I judge people by their "warning level", not their "post count". :ninja:

I like the post count. While some members spam away to high numbers, members like myself and Steven and John and etc. work hard at making every post count. I feel my post count is indicative of how much time I put into this community and I would hate to have it suddenly removed. If anything, it makes for great fun when a warned member uses my post count to proclaim how I think I'm high and mighty and on some power trip.

Without going into the pyschology of it all, the post count whilst on some level is meaningless, at other times it gives you an indication of the member as such, I mean if youve been here for a month and have a post count of like 2000 or something, and your trying to help me out with a post such as 'teh sucks' that indicates to me in future to ignore you. thats just one experience, but theres other instances were it is helpful as such.

In any case, the stars can go, but it doesnt hurt anyone by having the post count there, and truth be known I dont think not having it there would reduce the useless posts by a great percentage anyway.

But if the posts ever went id want the member no. highlighted or something, as id make that the new 'stat' to be as such :D

I'm not much of postwhore. I think anyone who's ever going to remember my posts, will remember them for my long, insightful, logical comments. I hope so, anyway.

I'm cutting back as of right now. Why you ask? Because I want to have 1000 posts by August 14th (My birthday) lol. Make it a 2-in-1 post in the Milestone subforum.

I managed to do that a while back. Going to try 2000 on my anniversary but I doubt if it's this year. Maybe next, after all it took nearly 4 years to get to 1000. Maybe 1337 by Annv. this year.

Yeah, as far as I can see the benefits would outweigh the costs.

As for Bangbang023, you and John have the Super Mod tag already- wouldn't that be just as effective means to prove the amount of work and time you have put into Neowin, as well as the trust the community has in you?

Lastly, I think most dedicated, good quality members (Such as yourself and many other moderators) are represented well by the content in their posts.

    • I just wish they would put more love into Virtual Desktops. There is just so much more they could do.
    • Sounds like you just skimmed over the review, I answer all those questions in it. Although I admit I did not test if DTS works over the headphones, when I get some time I will test this. My personal use case is more speaker-driven (I cover this in the review too).
    • It actually does the same exact thing as yours, 7.1 virtual surround over headphones. From the product page: "Experience sound that surrounds you with 7.1 virtual surround, delivering a wider, more immersive soundstage for movies, games, and music." So both of them are two channel, with 7.1 virtual surround that only work in Headphones mode.
