To be honest, I have no worries at al running this software. I never visit any malicious site or anything so what is there to worry about?

Yes, maybe google does have the ability to snoop users but I don't think they'll ever use it.

The only way I think the data they collect could potentially be used is by making their pagerank algorithms more sophisticated. Maybe they can better determine the popularity of a site by the number of people visiting it.

Or maybe the data could be forwarded to the government, the RIAA and the MPAA, and all other similar organisations.

? In order to speed up delivery of content,Google Web Accelerator may retrieve webpage content that you did not request>, and store it in your Google Web Accelerator cache.

If I broke the law, downloaded songs or downloaded movies.

..anyhoo.. although i've found the software *noticeably* speedy, i'm thinking that maybe it caches too much  Seems I can't login to my site with it enabled.

Sorry, but I won't be getting this.. I stopped at the part where it says " Google Web Accelerator sends requests for web pages, except for secure web pages (HTTPS), to Google, which logs these requests. " -- I don't want an advertising company spy on what I surf, this is like MarketScore.com but from Google.

Interesting..... what say you visit a site of ill-repute which links to sites of even more ill-repute. Are you, the requester, responsible for that content or Google?

This is often a pivotal argument for people caught downloading dodgy stuff - I didn't download it to my PC - just viewed it.

Exactly. First Google's advertising program reads your e-mails (GMAIL) to show you related ads.. And now Google Web Accelerator to send HTTP requests through Google. Technically they could make it so if you went to AltaVista.com or MSNSearch.com it would go to Google.com, but I highly doubt they would do it.. But they even said they will log all requests.

Sorry Google, I would like to keep spyware free.

Researchware should never be confused with spyware or adware.

Spyware is a piece of software that secretly tracks your computer behavior without your consent. Often, users are not aware that they have installed spyware on their computer, and they are not able to uninstall this software.

Google Web Accelerator is not spyware. Our processes and procedures are not done in secret – instead, we strive to fully inform potential panel members of the work we do and the way in which we do it. We are committed to describing what information we collect about our panelists and their Internet usage, how we collect this information, the steps that we take to protect the information provided to us, and the use we make of this information. All of these descriptions are provided – before you are able to install any software offered by us.

Jesus man.. why are people so paranoid. You make it sound like Sergey Brin sits there reading through everybody's e-mails. Gmail's an automated piece of software which scans e-mails for keywords, just like a spam blocker.

[que flaming war]

...was a joke by the way

You know what? I find it very cool that they explain how it works, so you are free to decide whether you want to trust them or not.

It's not like they are not saying what data is logged or whatever. We just have to trust that they won't use the information for any malicious puprose :p I don't trust, so I wont install this right now. Probably just to test someday.

Not a bad idea anyway.

Most of you need to ask yourselves this: is the possible risk (not saying there is one) worth the chance just to save 0.13 seconds of your daily web browsing? I don't trust Google just like I don't trust any group of people who's main intent is making money. Yes, they are a nice company, but they still need to make money. Besides that fact, how many people need to improve the page load time on their broadband connection?

I need the improvement and I really could care less if Google logs my furry pr0n viewing.
