I need the improvement and I really could care less if Google logs my furry pr0n viewing.

Yeah and if your doing something you don't want them to see, just turn it off for then, just since I downloaded it, it says ive already saved 20seconds and thats only after like 10min of using it. I'm sure it'll get better with time, it appears some pages are just there soon as i click, no render time or anything.

Most of you need to ask yourselves this: is the possible risk (not saying there is one) worth the chance just to save 0.13 seconds of your daily web browsing? I don't trust Google just like I don't trust any group of people who's main intent is making money. Yes, they are a nice company, but they still need to make money. Besides that fact, how many people need to improve the page load time on their broadband connection?

In a dramatic u-turn, Neowin member "Lee McDermott" decided to forcefully uninstall the contraversal product "Google Web Accelerator" after only 1 hour after it's install.

Lee McDermott, who kept the reasons for his decision behind closed doors had this to say: "it was for the best"

Alright, I supposed you haven't been reading their site lately.. Google Web Accelerator is Researchware, they even tell you that it is.

From Spyware to 'Research'ware within an hour ! Good progress

As much as I trust Google, I wont use it because I'm on broadband. It could be quite helpful for those on dialup, who knows. Besides its an optional download, its not like Google is making you install it in order to use their search engine.

Well you can tell its doing something because if u cant access a domain instead of firefox saying page cant be found google tells you

Error: Host Not Accessible

It's as though people feel Google's only motive is to give people free crap.

Yeah, and you're right it isn't. It's nothing about being free, it was never about that. It was about visibility, market share, and usability to make a lot of people use Google services and thereby improving the value companies see in their AdWords service, since a lot of people use these sponsored services. Google's business model is based entirely around making people want to use their services, for that reason. It just happens to be that providing free and good services while "playing nice" is a great way to become visible. It's a win/win situation for both us and Google. We get good services and Google gain profits that wouldn't be nearly as large if they were seen as an "evil company" like Microsoft (not saying they are, just that they're looked like that by a lot of people, far more than Google, and it's an intentional strategy by Google to not fall into that pit).

Sooo...

I think it isn't far fetched that Google will try to improve their search engine accuracy by using visit data -- simply by putting some weight in how often sites are visited. Voila, cross-linking scam sites with sporadic visits from fooled users finally go down the drain, and popular sites like Neowin strengthens their PageRank due to the Neowinians using Web Accelerator.

Heck, they're already working on this project! And they need real world visit data to pull it off.

They may not use these results in a very controversial way at all; actually with Google's past, that goes directly against what they've done. It's far more common for them to try conquering by improving.

It is nice however to let people use a web accelerator...hehe. Those dialup companies are probably ****ing their pants over this because this is a definite sales drop for companies that charge like 4 bucks to use (Insert evil dial up ISP here)'s new Web Accelerator.

Lots of paranoia going around, but I read a bit of the Slashdot discussion about this thing and saw a few good points.

1. This will be useful for them to tweak their new TrustRank system (not in place yet) to determine site relevance not by the number of physical links but by which links are actually used.

2. This could also be using us as "human spiders" (Googlebots?) to keep their index fresh and growing.

If this is what they're doing it for, its genius. If its for our browsing habits, not so much. Either way, I have no need for it, but I'm sure some will find it useful.

It was bound to happend that Google, as it expands, will eventually turn into an evil like today's major corporations. The more profit they generate, the more of that they want.

This is a sign.

Basically, this section of their support page says "We know who you are and what you like".

I like Google for what it currently offers but I'll just say "no" to this. Don't need it anyway.

Yeah another case of "installed for about 5 min and said **** it" with me....

It was apparently marking all threads in my forums read as soon as I entered the site, so when I click on a subforum it would no longer show different icons for the threads with new posts since my last visit, which sucks ass. So that, and the fact that I have a fast enough connection as it is, made me decide to dump it. (for now...)

You might want to check the spelling there, eh?

co.uk, not c.uk

I can trust Google, I'm using it right now, I can notice a difference. :)

Some of your blind trust toward google is distrubing.

Exactly!! I mean this is a prime example of a what a good reputation can do to your company. People will always think all of Google's products will be as good as their famous Internet search feature, because it's from.. Google. *sigh* Never underestimate power of a brand name.
