can the mini boots up off the firewire hd?

Recommended Posts

im thinking about getting a hd enclosure with a firewire cable output, i have an unused 7200rpm hd which i want to put into the hd enclosure and install osx into so the mini will boot up off the 7200 rpm hd instead of my default 5400rpm hd which is slow.

can it boot off the firewire?

im sorry for being a total n00b, this is my first mac and i love it. the operating system holds me to use my pc (amd64bit 3200) again. eventhough the mac mini is way sloweerrrr than my current pc rig.

and one more question, some jpg's files are opened in photoshop by default, how do i make a "preview" app to associate all those images file types?

and, when i select 2 or more image files and then press enter, why the "preview" app opens lots of windows insted opening the drawer?

thanks!

Yes, you can boot off the Firewire drive.

For the .jpg's, click on any .jpg and press Command+I to bring up the Get Info button. Then activate the Open With area and select Preview from the Drop Down menu. Then select Change All. Now all your .jpg's will open in Preview!

Not sure about the Preview thing, this may be new in Tiger. I know it used to open them in the drawer, at least when I selected a large number of pictures. Maybe for just 2 or 3 it'll actually open them in new windows.

ah thanks alot mate about the help mate! anyway, im getting the hard drive enclosure tommorow and install the os on it! :D

a 7200rpm HD over firewire will be slower than your internal HD. Your limited to the speed of the FW bus, which is 400mb/sec.

No it won't. The Mini sports a 4200rpm drive, which will be slower than external Firewire drives...depending on the speed of the drive of course

    • Wow, spoken like a true blind hater, you don't even provide arguments. Please, go check my comment above to @seacaptain and you'll find out why what you say doesn't make sense in this context...
    • Get used to this, with AI tooling now uncovering new vulns and getting them exploitable far faster than has ever been possible before software is going to need to be updated far more frequently. Back in the day it may take reseachers weeks or months to do what AI can now do in hours. Once its a threat is discovered it's weaponsized far more quickly, meaning you simply can't be waiting 2, 3, 4 weeks to deploy a patch, it needs to be patched immediately. Going to be interesting handling this in the enterprise space where traditionally patching has been steady, but very staged (and rightly so up until now), that is going to have to change.
    • You don't need to "close all browser sessions constantly" or wait for updates to install. The updates download in the background while you use the browser, without interrupting you, they install automatically the next time you launch the app. And they install very fast (depending on your storage speeds, of course), you have to wait at most 2-3 extra seconds, if any. Seems like you haven't used Edge in a loooooooong time...
