Now your making no sense.

Apple's not really a direct competitor to anything that runs windows.

They're a direct competitor (and a very profitable one) to everything that runs on Windows.

If they had clones then they would have competition.

No, then there would just be clones.

You have to pick an apple computer if you want the Mac OS.

I have to pick Levis if I want to wear 501 jeans.

With windows systems they are competing against each other and this drives down prices putting pressure on each company.  Apple doesn't have to worry about this so much.

They have to worry about the entire Wintel world building a more compelling platform or risk going the way of the Amiga, BeOS, OS/2, etc.

Face it, the world has chosen a platform.  :D (Put this here to make you angry.) It's a jk btw.

It takes more than an ignorant person spouting uninformed opinion to make me angry.

I'm quiet happy to point out when you're speaking bull****, in fact that makes me a little happy.

What does 501 jeans have to do with anything? Last I checked MacOS isn't different than windows because of a tag. This analogy might work if you bought apple stuff because it was made by apple or if 501's could make you fly or something.

Apple isn't a direct competitor to anything that runs windows. They are a direct competitor to Microsoft though.

When apple authorized the making of clone computers they began to get hurt on their desktop sales. This is something Steve Jobbs cut out as soon as he came back.

They were no longer competing on the OS level. They had real competition with I think it was like Umax and there were a couple others.

Like some people say your buying an OS with a computer that comes with it.

What exactly was uninformed about my last statement? I was being sarcastic but it's still true. Apple while making money in their little corner still can't claim a dominance on the overall market.

I googled and couldnt find any benchmarks putting PC's ahead... Especially for SPECfp95 benchmarks, where PC's just get punished...

Link me to the benchmarks you've seen please.

Umm... where? Apple.com?

http://www.spec.org/

Apple doesn't publish their results there (probably because it would be embarassing). In fact, it looks like they pulled their scores from Apple.com as well.

When they launched the G5s, they claimed SpecInt and SpecFP scores of 800 and 840, respectively... for a Dual 2Ghz G5 system. They've since upped those speeds to 2.5 and now 2.7Ghz, but haven't shown what kind of increase that gives on Spec benchmarks.

For reference, a single Acer system with one Xeon 3.6Ghz processor scores 1512 and 1511, (for SpecInt and SpecFP, respectively).

No wonder Apple pulled their SPEC benchmarks.

macssuck is making perfect sense. To be honest, I really don't know if he could make his points any clearer.

Levis, being one of his examples...if you want 501 jeans, you have to buy them from Levi. If you want a Macintosh, you have to buy it from Apple.

It has nothing to do with choosing a computing platform. Sure it lines up but its a bad comparison.

If you want windows you have to pick a 386 based machine but you have 1,000s of options. If you want the mac OS you have to buy one of the like what 6 models Apple sales. My point was if you pick mac os then you need a apple system. If you compare the revenue of apple with Dell, you might as well compare apple to every vendor put togethor that sells a system with windows.

The nintendo one would be a little better if you wanted to play a game available only on nintendo.

I'm done arguing. Mac will probably come on here and call me ignorant again or something but he's entitled to his opinion.

They do the same job, much like different brands of jeans or coffee makers or pens all do the same job.

Apple isn't a direct competitor to anything that runs windows.

So a company that makes most of their income selling computers doesn't compete with the other companies selling with computers?

They are a direct competitor to Microsoft though.

But they do compete with a company that makes most of their income selling an operating system and an office suite?

Why? Because you say so?

When apple authorized the making of clone computers they began to get hurt on their desktop sales. This is something Steve Jobbs cut out as soon as he came back.

Power computing, DayStar, Radius.

What about it?

Like some people say your buying an OS with a computer that comes with it.

You've made a few statements in this thread. The first on that comes to mind was Post 36 of this thread. I pointed out your made up bull**** and you never retracted it.

You've gone on to speak whatever thought pops into your little mind without any evidence. Your only defense is making a lot of noise and hand waving. No logical argument, no data sources, just "I want it to be true so it must be".

Doesn't look like you're winning many converts with that line of reasoning, maybe you could try something different like...I don't know...arguing an opinion based on facts based on more than 6 seconds of research.

Just a thought.

I was being sarcastic but it's still true. Apple while making money in their little corner still can't claim a dominance on the overall market.

Nobody said they could. But they are profitable and they are the #5 world-wide maker of desktop computers (by market share). See March 05 Macworld or the most recent IDC report for details.

I have yet to see a stance on your part. I don't really even know what your arguing except disagreeing with me and name calling. And I don't believe anything I have said is wrong.

Would you buy an Apple computer if it only ran windows and there was no apple OS?

I said I was done but you won't drop it.

Apple has almost half of their revenues in ipod/itunes. I'm not sure what your idea of facts are. I'm making nothing up.

    • That's just silly imo. The lengths that man goes to just to avoid W11 is just nuts. Very, very few home users would do that. I will say this though, he is committed. Btw, I note on askwoody that Woody Leonhard passed away March, 2025 aged 73. His site was one of my favorites back in the day. Belated yes but RIP Woody.
    • Because of the EU (a good thing) newer android devices been getting 5 years worth of security patches. Except some Motorola which found the loop hole, and offer ZERO updates. In addition, Google for years have been making where it can patch some stuff by updating the core Google Play Store itself.  As echoed earlier,  you take the security risk in to your own hand beyond supported.
