Recommended Posts

I just use Aluria Spyware Eliminator, and of course Ad-Aware

Hijackthis occasinally or when needed

I can't honestly remember the last time I visited a site which required javascript to be enabled other than rapidshare

Scan any archives I download and it works for me

- Note - You might want to update your guide to suggest disabling "System Restrore" while cleaning malware from "Safe Mode". Possibly some basic info to tell people how to do that would be helpful as well. Think it this way, you reboot to safe mode, clean spyware, then a couple days later your system crashes and need to use restore point to back up and running again. If you left system restore on when you were cleaning the malware, odds are doing the restore will reinfect you all over again. It seems better to disable system restore in safe mode, clean the system, then enable system restore again and create new restore point.

Other than that, very nicely done guide!

ccleaner is also a very helpful tool to get rid of malware in your system. Many antivirus programs have problems removing files and folders from the windows temp folder like temporary internet files and sun javas cache folder. This tool is a good help when trying to empty those folders.

Also running this kind of tool before running a virus/malware scan and discdefrag cuts down in the scantime becuase it removes unnecesary files from your system.

Thankyou for your advice. In my case the only and last resort was PCTools Spyware Doctor - it did what all the other products failed (some dismally) to do and that's remove the spyware.

I completely agree, Spyware Doctor is by far the best product out there right now. If anyone is interested in purchasing it, I have a coupon to get you a discount on the product that brings the price to $20. It is well worth it for this awesome program!

good info - I didn't scan the *whole* thread for additional info, such as Block Lists for SpywareBlaster and also Bazooka scanner. I rated this a 4 since this info is *extremely* prevalent all over the net, and there is a lot more detail in other places (Aumha.org, Calendar of Updates, etc.). However, I have to say this is the most concise explanation there is, for folks who have a good amount of computer knowledge and aren't afraid to figure out a lot of the info on their own.

Here ia a problem that is puzzling me.... My brothers comptuer has/had a ton of virii and spyware. I installed Spybot S & D, Spyware Blaster, Regvac, Crap Cleaner, Trojan Cleaner Hunter and Kaspersky Personal AV. I removed everything that these products detected. I turned off the Windows Restore Feature. I then installed Adaware and when I run it, it reboots my computer after it detects 2 issues. I have tried to watch which two, and it is different evertime I run the prog. I have researched the various ones that it gets stuck on and it they are all normal MS files. I have tried to boot to Safe Made and after I enter my login credential (tried Administrator and Power User), it just goes to a black screen and never moves. I have waited a really long time (15-20 min.) and it still sits on the black screen.

I know there is something, but it is driving me nuts. Any help is appreciated.

Win XP Home, 2.6Ghz, 500MB RAM.

Do you know what directory they are in? You may want to boot off a restore cd and delete them from there if you can't get into safe mode. Also, try to install avast and use the boot scan feature as well as installing windows defender and using that. An online antivirus scan is also a good idea so that you can at least find the name of the threat and then work from there.

    • Because of the EU (a good thing) newer android devices been getting 5 years worth of security patches. Except some Motorola which found the loop hole, and offer ZERO updates. In addition, Google for years have been making where it can patch some stuff by updating the core Google Play Store itself.  As echoed earlier,  you take the security risk in to your own hand beyond supported.
