I think your explorer.exe is broken, I would put hijack this on a floppy (or usb thumb stick) then boot to safe mode comand prompt only, and run hjthis off the floppy ... clean that up then start explorer c:\windows(winnt)\explorer.exe

Actually I installed VundoFix after finding the recommendation on google. This seems to have fixed the issue and I can now run Adaware and boot into Safe mode. Thanks everyone for their suggestions.
