[Definitive] Sony PS3 Thread

Recommended Posts

That controller looks awfully uncomfortable but the console is beautiful. It's a bit sleeker than the 360. I also admire that Sony didn't just add a 3 to the PS2 logo.

All in all I like the 360 better, not just because of my preference for the controller but I like the idea of customizing faceplates. Who cares though, its the games that matter.

Killzone 2 looks totally awesome. I that actual gameplay footage? It looks like it is since it switches to first person.

I can't tell. It looks like it is actual footage because the person pulls out a gun, and is shown from the general FPS view, but then again there is no HUD.
how much memory is dedicated to each system for the gpu's?

Sony also unveiled the PS3's graphics chip, the RSX "Reality Synthesizer," which is based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD resolution around. The RSX also has 512MB of graphics render memory and is capable of 100 billion shader operations and 51 billion dot products per second. It also has more than 300 million transistors, larger than any processor commercially available today. It will be manufactured using the 90nm process, with eight layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 Ultra video cards, which would cost roughly $1,000 total if purchased today

does that mean 256mb+256mb+512mb

how much memory is dedicated to each system for the gpu's?

As much of the 512mb gddr3 that the xbox 360 guys want to use (its a unified memory architecture) and the 10mb embedded is for the frame buffer. On the PS3 the 256mb gddr3 is probably the graphics memory. I guess that the 256mb xdr is for everything else. So I guess that the xbox 360 has 10mb more memory than the PS3 (not saying that that makes it better, since as of right now I think its pretty evident that the PS3 probably has a slight edge in the specs. But since its coming out second that was pretty obvious). I can't wait to see the revolution, I am dying to see its specs. Hopefully nintendo doesn't failed me, since both MS and Sony have amazed me over this past week. Now to buy a bigger hdtv before these things come out, lol.

Here is what everyone has been waiting for, the IGN comparison:

the Xbox 360 processor is not a G5... G5s are based on the power4 design the 360 is based on power5... thats a big difference... :p

funny thing is that the PS3 is about the size of the original Xbox... now I just want to see if the PS fan boys are going to mention the size of the console and say "what? that thing is bigger than my house!"

I watching the Sony E3 Press Conference, and I could've sworn I heard the speaker said the PS3 processor is twice as fast as the 360. Could've heard wrong though.

I watched the e3 press conference on gamespot and it sounded like he said 512 mb for vram...

Edit - look at the t-flops not the GHZ which is the same... xbox has 1 ps3 has 2 1x2=2...

You could be right. Freaking every site has different specs. I remember earlier tonight when someone posted the PS3 could process 10 TFlops.

Ya, that was posted SEVERAL times however i think that article contradicted itself on that point..

And on the comparison chart, I can't wait to see the price category added to there >.<

Edit - Ah, now I remember..the article said that the ps3 had 10 tflops and was twice as fast as the xbox(1 tflop).

Just finished Watching the Video At Gamespot, Im amazed and Happy!! I cant wait , Its coming out In spring my Birthday!! My opinion is Ps3 IS better the Xbox 360.

    • Since they open sourced the calculator in Win 10/11 it is much better and can do a lot, I love it.
    • That's just silly imo. The lengths that man goes to just to avoid W11 is just nuts. Very, very few home users would do that. I will say this though, he is committed. Btw, I note on askwoody that Woody Leonhard passed away March, 2025 aged 73. His site was one of my favorites back in the day. Belated yes but RIP Woody.
    • Because of the EU (a good thing) newer android devices been getting 5 years worth of security patches. Except some Motorola which found the loop hole, and offer ZERO updates. In addition, Google for years have been making where it can patch some stuff by updating the core Google Play Store itself.  As echoed earlier,  you take the security risk in to your own hand beyond supported.
