AVG doesn't have residen protection?  I think that you're mistaken.  AVG Free has the AVG Resident Shield component which is installed with every installation of AVG Free.

I guess I'm using a different definition of resident, I consider resident scanners to catch viruses before they're opened or run.

AVG's resident scanner will find viruses when a file is opened/accessed/enumerated/downloaded/etc - It found viruses on my roommate's network share as soon as I browsed to it.

That's how most resident scanners work.

It will also set itself up to run a scan in the middle of the night of your entire system.

What else would you possibly want it to do?

Funny how it didn't do that for me. I guess that's no small surprise since it can't even remove all the viruses that it finds, and it doesn't find all the viruses to start with.
