Now that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 specifications have been announced, it is possible to do a real world performance comparison of the two systems.

There are three critical performance aspects of a console:

Central Processing Unit (CPU) performance.

o The Xbox 360 CPU architecture has three times the general purpose processing power of the Cell.

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) performance

o The Xbox 360 GPU design is more flexible and it has more processing power than the PS3 GPU.

Memory System Bandwidth

The memory system bandwidth in Xbox 360 exceeds the PS3?s by five times.

oh muh gee!!

we won't truly know which is better until they are both released and we can see the real world application, not what they have the power to do

but that's if you're talking better games vs. better hardware.

personally, xbx is coming out on top in both categories this time.

NuT Uh!!!one!!1one!! It's oblivous witch 1's bettar!!!!one!!!!!!11!!!one

The __________ is so much better th3n ___________!!1one!1!!1!!!one!!!

From what I've read I would have thought the PS3 would be more powerful, though I'm still leaning towards the Xbox 360 - features like Xbox Live are very important to me and online play is something Sony have showed no real progress in.

How can you compare two things when all you are going by is the specs? While something may look good on paper, it can, and probably will be a totally different experience in real world usage. As for me, im not making any judgements BEFORE they are released and certainly not based on specs, I am going for the one that offers the better games that I am interested in.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting information. Definetly clears a lot of stuff.

I knew that XBox 360 will be the more powerful console ever. Sony's presentation was designed to cast doubts about Microsoft's superior console in people's minds and I was influenced too.

This article effectively blows the cap off Sony's hype machine. :p

BTW, There are 4 parts to this article you should post links to all 4 parts:

how can they just compare the memory system bandwidth like that? they're completely different. PS3 has XDR AND GDDR3, whilst the x360 has only GDDR3. ps3 has split their 512 in half to dedicate some to the GPU (i think) and some to the Cell.

Xbox 360 has 278.4 GB/s of memory system bandwidth. The PS3 has less than one-fifth of Xbox 360?s (48 GB/s) of total memory system bandwidth.

"Stands Vertically or Horizontally, Backwards Compatible, Downloadable Games"

Those are useless when you are comparing hardcore specs like bandwidth, floating point etc.

Backwards compatible is useful when comparing consoles. Joe Average does not give a damn about bandwidth or floating point performance as long as it has the games he wants to play and they look and play well.

Uhh... you cannot compare them like that. First of all, you cannot add or average different components in a system to come up with a total/average for a system. You are also not taking into account that the 200+ GB number is for the 10MB Embedded RAM which is basically like L3 cache for the GPU. The data still has to go from the shared ram to the GPU before going into that fast "cache" and you can only store 10MB or textures in there.

I really think the shared ram is also a bad idea in the XBox 360. Looking at the specs, the PS3 is more powerful because of the lower effective bandwidth compared to the PS3 and the possibility of RAM contention between the CPU and GPU.

Granted but there are no specs on Revolution yet besides for those tiny tidbits. You cannot compare Revolution to any of these consoles yet.

    • yeah it seems to be Edge only. The dialog buttons work as expected in Chrome and Firefox. The phone is using Android 16 (OneUI 8.5) and Edge version  149.0.4022.53
    • I'm not aware of this issue, but to help the other guys.  What version of Android are you using? Did you try a different browser? To see if Edge is the issue here.
    • I agree when are you going to read this (really poor BTW) article? Here is a better article so you actually know what is going on and answers questions you had in other comments --> https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/05/speed-boosting-low-latency-profile-is-one-of-the-improvements-coming-to-windows-11/ It is unclear if one will be able to disable the new profile at this point but I am not seeing any reason why one would.
