@denzilla

Am I to understand that this newer file is not working for you?

Are you deleting other references to this file?

You seem to be getting quite upset about this...that's why I ask.

Have you successfully replaced UXTHEME.dll before?

The version of the file comes from MS hotfix Q319740

Naw, I'm not really upset, more like frustratingly perplexed :) Its really quite a stupid problem to have. I've never had any trouble switching Uxthemes before. I don't use the neowin patcher, I simply boot to safe mode and then just rename the original uxtheme.dll and then replace it with the already patched dll. Been doing that for months and never an issue. Tried the newer files and they work as well as the dll I had been using. Same issue with the Java control panel with all of em.

Where are these other references? I do remember something about the dll being cached, but I did a search (hidden files/folders included) and didn't find anything else.

Thanks for your help

@denzilla

No offense meant by these questions.

First of all, do you have compression software that may have taken focus from MS-CAB files? This may affect searching capabilities into these files.

Check these locations:

C:\Windows\System32\DLLCACHE

C:\Windows\$________ <<=Hotfix uninstall folders

Also I have seen on my own computer that if DTC is enabled Windows may not release a file that is dragged and sometimes even copied to another location.

Oh, and just so you know...this can be in a normal startup...I don't think I have ever gone into safe mode for this. As long as everything is done in the correct order.

Try this...after you rename the file hit END on the keyboard to got to the last file in the directory...after a few seconds (without refreshing the window) the file should appear again...if it is still finding it somewhere...

I went searching after the last post and I did find the other references to the file, so I went through and deleted them all and again replaced it with version 2900.2523 which is the post SP2/SP3 alpha, rebooted and same result. I did manage to find another visual style with the same issue called metallic shades. All 15 other themes I have don't experience this problem.

I give up \o/

can anyone recommend a matching yztoolbar skin?

also thanks to whoever reposted the non royal shellstyle. so much better then the defaulf luna one. wonder why em3 dont put dazzaa's shell into the package? as well as the royal shell too. i am sure both shellstyle makers will give permission and it will make the download for people getting it for the first time a much better experience.

If you would not mind could you kindly post a link to this (MS KB Hot Fix Article) ?

I have been PMing with some other members who like moi are also experiencing this rather 'strange java control panel issue'...lol

These continuing efforts on the part of our collective membership is in hopes of finding a possible solution, or reason for why it is occuring with some of us, while not with others..Nothing else...No disrespect to anyone involved... :)

I have WinXP SP2, English Version and have manually patched my uxtheme.dll file with a post here @Neowin, where a member kindly posted links to a patched 'uxtheme.dll' for SP2 in a bunch of various languages for WinXP SP2 OS...Now I need to find the darn thread...

But I manually replaced my Orig_uxtheme.dll_SP2 with Replacer and had not had any issues with my JRE_1.5_Update3 Control Panel with various 'also high quality VS' except with LunaElement2 & LunaElement3...

I still keep a copy of my Orig_SP2_uxtheme.dll:

File Version: 6.0.2900.2180

(xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

The patched SP2_uxtheme.dll:

File Version: 6.0.2900.2180

(xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

Now to find the thread posted here @Neowin...

Here's the KB article he's talking about:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q319740

ok denzilla, thanks as I will explored a little more into it, but am sure that if/when I replace my present patched SP2 uxtheme.dll file, that I too will have the same results, being 'no change' with Java Control Panel windows having 'no buttons'...

I have not found the thread here @Neowin (yet) where I got my present patched uxtheme.dll, but I do have this file on one of my email servers, if any member (who has better technical knowledge then me) wants to 'take a look at it'...

6.0.2900.2180_EN.rar (97k)

Ok, maybe all the info that our collective membership provides may produce a 'common fix'...this is where a I got my patched SP2 uxtheme.dll, however the provided link no longer works:

I headed over to http://www.vortex-scratchpad.info/reposit...atches/Uxtheme/ and was confuse of all the diff version of uxtheme patch

sometimes the multi-patcher will not work and you will have to patch it manually. the best way to do this is to grab the appropriate uxtheme file from here: http://www.vortex-scratchpad.info/reposito...atches/Uxtheme/

and download a copy of replacer: http://www3.telus.net/_/replacer/

extract the contents of replacer to an empty folder. run replacer.cmd and drag in the original uxtheme.dll, then drag in the modified uxtheme.dll that you downloaded, and let it replace the file. reboot when prompted.

Well, it doesn't appear that the theme is at fault.  Works for me, like I said.  Maybe you're theme patcher is messing you up?

585963576[/snapback]

But how can you rule out the theme being at fault when 15 other themes including the Official MS Luna themes work without a glitch? Like I said, Metallicshades is the only other theme that duplicates the issue in my testing. I think there is a flaw both themes share that is causing an issue for some and not others.

....And I didn't use a theme patcher. I installed a ready made uxtheme file

Lets all compare configs. Here is mine:

WinXP Pro SP2 Fully updated

Sun Java Runtime v5.0 update 2

32-bit color @ 1024x768 (Intel Extreme gfx 2 integrated)

uxtheme.dll version 6.0.2900.2523_EN

uxtheme.dll version 6.0.2900.2523_EN

There is definately validity to this:

I have just recently done a 'fresh install' of my WinXP SP2 laptop:

WinXP Home SP2 Fully Updated

Sun Java Runtime v1.5 (aka 5.0) Update3

32-bit color@ 800 x 600 (Integrated Trident Video Accelerator CyberBlade)

uxtheme.dll version 6.0.2900.2180_EN

Granted the above Integrated graphics card is not the best-lol, however all VS that I have utilized (from my colleagues, Franco(KoL), Ross(b0se), & Stefan(StefanKa) do not show this issue...Nor does the original LunaElement VS...

This is not a complaint, but an effort to hopefully 'get a common fix/solution' to why LunaElement2 & now LunaElement3 (only) show this glitch on some of our systems...and then not on others...

This type of a different issue happened to another 'high quality' themer, and after all of our members at another forum posted up different setups, ect., a common solution/fix/reason why some members experienced the glitch, & others did not' was found...

Here's my mine:

WinXP Pro SP2 Fully updated

J2SDK (development environment, not just jre) v5.0 update 3

32-bit color @ 1280x1024 (Nvidia Geforce 2 Titanium)

Neowin patcher from like last summer

Smitjel,

First of all, thanks man for posting your 'setup' and being patient with those of us who are experiencing this 'weird glitch'...As you stated & showed, you do/did NOT have this glitch on either the original LunaElement, LunaElement2 or LunaElement3...

All of us who did NOT have this glitch with Original LunaElement, had this glitch with LunaElement2 and now with LunaElement3...Definately strange...

But I see that you also have:

J2SDK (Development Environment) v5.0 Update3

JDK 5.0 Update 3 includes the JVM technology

The J2SE Development Kit (JDK) supports creating J2SE applications. More info...

Download JDK 5.0 Update 3

And you are useing a older Neowin uxtheme.dll patcher...

Whereas I have:

JRE 5.0 Update 3 includes the JVM technology

The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications. More info...

Download JRE 5.0 Update 3

I'm just grasping for any common link, setup, that might point us in the right direction for a solution...So this leads me to believe that it is not an issue with any of the uxtheme.dll patchers be it auto patch or manual patch

    • Still 3x what it should cost. So, it seems the trick is to increase price by 6x so that a reduction in price back to 4x looks like a steal. "You savvy shoppers win again!" I'm glad I'm not in a desperate spot to actually even need this overpriced crap. Hopefully, it comes back down by the time for when (or if) I ever do.

    • Microsoft wants to end printer driver headaches with Windows Ready Print by Usama Jawad A few days ago, Microsoft released Windows 11 Experimental build 26300.8553, bringing a ton of enhancements such as Start menu customization, search improvements, Taskbar polish, and other minor UI tweaks. Another relatively major enhancement snuck deep within the change log was related to upgrades to the Windows printing experience. Now, Microsoft has shared more details about these benefits. For starters, Microsoft has renamed its Modern Print Platform to Windows Ready Print. The company believes that this name highlights its shift in strategy, which now focuses on modernizing, securing, and streamlining the printing experience for Windows devices. Some of the upgrades present in Windows Ready Print have already been seeded to customers and partners. This includes ending support for third-party printer drivers via Windows Update and transitioning towards the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) and the native Windows IPP printer driver. In line with these changes, new printer installations will default to Windows Ready Print on eligible devices starting from July 2026. However, Microsoft recognizes that not all environments will be able to migrate to this platform immediately, so it will allow users to choose between installing the printer via Windows Ready Print or the traditional OEM process. Users will be able to toggle this configuration through Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners > Printer preferences. This control applies only to new printer installations, and its functionality can also be modified via Group Policy as follows: Launch Group Policy Editor Navigate to Local Computer Policy -> Administrative Templates -> Printers Find and select 'Configure Windows Ready Print driver ranking' -> double click to open it Select 'Enabled' (if you wish to enable Windows Ready Print driver selection) or 'Disabled' (if you wish to explicitly disable Windows Ready Print driver selection). Select Apply Select OK Similarly, if you set up Windows protected print mode through the same setting in Windows 11, it will also default to using Windows Ready Print exclusively. Microsoft hopes that these improvements will help eradicate dependency on OEM-specific driver installation processes and simplify printer installations. We'll likely find out more about other tangible benefits in the coming months.
