Interpretation of 'Football'

Football - we call it around Europe but Americans prefer to say Soccer.

I think Americans are wrong, i don't know who came up with the name first but Football is played with the feet, American Football is more like Rugby.

Its inappropriatly named and you can tell Americans came up with the word soccer to correct themselves :rolleyes:

You call your game football, we call it soccer.. Its not right or wrong?? Is not Rugby also called Australian Football in Australia?

In the UK they are chips, we call them french fries.. You have lorry we have truck, etc.. etc.. There is no right or wrong to it.. Couple of them are real sports, the other is a bunch of guys running around kicking a ball.. where most games end up in a draw or 1 - 0:woot:: :rofl::

Actually, the formal names of the NFL teams include "Football Club" as well.

Like it or not, everyone knows that European Football is also called Soccer.

There is no other name for NFL type Football.

So for clarity between the two, the names are Soccer and Football.  Fans of both sports then know which is which.

Like I said, for a multi-cultural forum, this is the easiest way to decipher the two...American Football and European Football are too wordy for titles.

Simply enough, all of these games are called "football", or were to begin with. Over the course of time, different rule specifications effectively made them different sports. So, different types of football became soccer (association football rules), rugby (rugby football rules) etc.

The American game was more or less derived from rugby, and there are small similarities with the variety of rugby known as Rugby League, most notably the concept of a certain number of completed tackles (downs) to advance the ball, after which possession is turned over if no score results. The kicking element was originally much more common in the American game, with the concept of kicked goals from open play similar to dropped goals in rugby. The development of the forward pass pushed the kicking game to one side, as a thrown ball can be controlled much more accurately than a kicked one, and possession more safely retained.

As for the name, in common with most varieties, it's just known as football to its own players, and American football to those who wish to distinguish it from other forms. In Ireland, the word football is generally used to refer to Gaelic football, an indigenous game with similarities to both soccer and rugby (round ball, but handling allowed). Similarly, Australian football (known sometimes as Australian Rules football) is simply referred to as football or footy in Australia. isn't it more logical if theres confusion about a word, to not use it at all? when i see football i think our football when its really about american football. i'm sure something like [NFL] at start would be more appropiate and people can't get confused about that and isn't too wordy.

Because NFL is not the only 'American' football You have canadian league, Europe, Arena, etc.

There is a confusion on the word. That is why we are using soccer to clear it up. We had an Aussie Rules pinned topic, but there was no interest.....so the two major sports are Soccer and Football.

It's how it is, folks...it's not going to change.

Canadian Football has separate and distinct rules from American Football. It may be more similar to American Football than Australian Rules Football, for instance, but it is not the same thing.

regardless i would stick to saying 'football' if i were to post about a match, such as the recent liverpool game. i want to stick true to british tradition, and someone britain created.

i would of course say soccer if someone failed to understand, but only after i've used the word football.

and anyway, it's usually easier to understand when you read the word football in context. when talking about a team with a ridiculous name that has a very loose relation to the area the team's home is, then you know it's american football!

No such team as the New York Eagles. It's NY Giants and Philadelphia Eagles.

And as far as the original question goes. . I personally have NO idea where the name soccer originated from for use in the States. All Wikipedia says is

American football sucks anyway. It is SO boring to watch. The only thing I can think that is more boring to watch then American football is Baseball and Golf.

80% of the time, NOTHING IS HAPPENING in American football. People are just standing around looking serious.

Give me some real sports! Like Hockey, Soccer, or Basketball. Where something is actually happening, and real athletes are in a real endurance contest.

I'm personally a fan of both. But if you don't think NFL players are real athletes, well I'd like to see YOU get hit as hard as they do play after play and get back up. If you think it's boring that's fine it's an opinion but to suggest they're not real athletes is simply absurd. In fact I don't know of another sport where you can have such a variety of gifted athletes. You may have a wideout who can run a 40-yard dash in 4 seconds or a lineman who can bench press 300 lbs. Not to mention guys with 4 ft vertical leaps. Find me another sport where you have such a variety of gifted athletes.

The funny thing here in North America is that most people find soccer boring compared to american football etc.I have spent countless hours trying to get people interested in soccer
