Creative Zen Xtra Questions

since i didn't actually get my hands on a creative zen xtra by purchasing it [my friend gave me his... then bought a new one]

i have a few questions.

1] is media source required to transfer files to the zen?

2] if so, why can't it function like a usb hd?

3] is media source the only software i need to install to transfer files to my zen?
