jerry
There was once a time, not long ago, when there was a clear performance divide between laptops and their desktop counterparts. That divide has been shrinking over the last few years, thanks to potent mobile CPUs, huge screens, and, now, mobile GPUs that are as fast as decent desktop parts. You have to pay the price, notably in cost and form factor, but there's an undeniable appeal of mobile gaming that puts most users' PCs to shame. Dell tried to get into the all-singing, all-dancing gaming laptop scene with its Inspiron XPS model. It packed a punch but it also packed a lot of heat. Battery life, whilst not the most important criteria for a DTR laptop, was, well, laughable. However, Dell's learned a thing or two about top-end desktop replacements recently, and it's now back with a Generation 2 model. Is it just a case of adding a suffix and scant little else, or is the Gen 2 the DTR all you deep-walleted enthusiasts have secretly been hankering after? Let's find out. Read More.. b0m8er
(Y) good review. As a proud owner of that laptop I can say - that baby is a beast :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/334209-dell-inspiron-xps-gen-2-laptop-review/#findComment-586088597 Share on other sites
Cyrilix
Very nice laptop, but all that weight and power-draining gear sort of defeats the purpose of ultimate mobility, in my opinion. Still nice for anyone wanting a desktop replacement, though. BroChaos Veteran Posted June 20, 2005 Veteran Share Posted June 20, 2005 the performance is amazing, but that has to be the ugliest laptop ever made. what makes it even more humorous is in the commercial where they try to pretend like it's good looking, and even use the line "the only thing better than the dell xps' looks is it's performance". i laugh so hard i cry every time i hear that. Steven
Why Dell didn't ship them a model with the Hitachi 60GB, 80GB or 100GB 7200 RPM drive is beyond me. 7200RPM Laptop drives really do improve the performance of your system. I've had 4200, 5400 and now a 7200RPM drive in my Inspiron 6000. It makes a world of difference.
