"BMW is to build a turbocharged version of the 1-Series which could put an end to the speculation about whether there will be an M1. There won't be one.

The 135Ti, which Autocar's spy shots caught circulating at the N?rburgring, could pack as much as 330bhp from its 3-litre six-cylinder powerplant.

To make this happen, BMW will use a standard production engine, rather than borrow the M3's which would have punted the car's price into a prohibitively high bracket -- maybe ?30,000-plus. The magnesium-block engine is new but is planned to sit inside the nose of the 3-Series and the X3 next year, so the cost will be spread over several models.

The new car will go head-to-head with the VW Golf R34's 260bhp, Ford Focus ST with 217 bhp and the Audi A3 3.2 V6 quattro's 250bhp. However, with the next M3 due to deliver 400bhp leaving plenty of horsepower space below it, there's some headroom for Munich's engine department to play with.

The BMW 135Ti has yet to get the production thumbs-up, but Autocar reckons it's a good bet. If that happens, expect to make your dash to the showrooms in 2007."

i find it hard to believe that bmw will produce a turbocharged 135Ti. they have not used turbos for quite a while in any of their engines, and that naming really doesnt sound right since ti has designated compact versions of previous bmws.

anyway, the 6cylinder 3.0L 130i with 260hp is prob what theyll use to fight against the golf r32/r36, focus ST, audi A3, etc

i wish the 1 had come to north america

the 1-series is horrible, if u can see past the badge it looks like a turtle.

If you can see past the badge, you'll see that it's one of the best handling small cars, which is much better fun to drive than any other small car.

The 120d is also one of the most powerful diesels in it's class with a power output that would shame most petrol cars.

The 125i, 130i and 135ti will also be great handling cars.

The looks aren't to everyone's taste, but, at least it's distinctive, unlike most other cars in it's class.

330hp from 3 liters.. thats 110hp per liter, thats more then most cars.

Yep but you have to remember we are talking forced induction. Its not that unusualy for a car thats turbocharged. Look at the Japanese 'supercars of the early nineties. 3000GT, Supra, Stealth, 300ZX. 3.0s with 300 or more horspower. And that's 15 years ago.
