What? I said $35,000US, not ?35,000. $50,000US cuts into higher BMW territory, which will of course be better than their entry level vehicle.:

the article states the car will be 30000 quid plus

To make this happen, BMW will use a standard production engine, rather than borrow the M3's which would have punted the car's price into a prohibitively high bracket -- maybe ?30,000-plus. The magnesium-block engine is new but is planned to sit inside the nose of the 3-Series and the X3 next year, so the cost will be spread over several models.

ok its kind of mukry what its trying to say buy the top model will be over 50k and im guessing the lower model wont be more than 10k less. thats 40k for a wagon... would you buy one? i wouldnt.

edit: ok i got some prices.

116i - ?15,690 = 27000 USD

116i SE - ?17,640 = 30975 USD

116i Sport - ?17,640

120i - ?18,320

120i SE - ?20,270

120i Sport - ?20,170

118d - ?17,340

118d SE - ?19,290

118d Sport - ?19,290

120d - ?18,850

120d SE - ?20,800

120d Sport - ?20,700 = 36350 USD

Petrol

116i: 1.6-litre, 115bhp@6000rpm, 110lb ft@4300rpm

120i: 2.0-litre, 150bhp@6200rpm, 147lb ft@3600rpm

Diesel

118d: 2.0-litre, 122bhp@4000rpm, 206lb ft@2000rpm

120d: 2.0-litre, 163bhp@4000rpm, 250lb ft@2000rpm

looking at these specs and prices... its not a tough choice to pass the car up over competitors.

the article talks about the new turbocharged 1 series which will be well over 40USD.

honestly comparing the new 1 series to its competition in the same category... you would see that its garbage. the price they asking for is too much. audi a3, vw golf r34, ford focus svt. i mean come on. its not like its performance is way better than the competition unless u wanna fork out over 40k for the turbocharged version.

its not me, its a fact that they are in the same category..

edit: we're talking about market segment not personal opinion. so whether you liek it or not, the 1 series is up against those cars i listed and then some.

but anyways. would you pay 27000 USD for 115hp 116i? or 25000 USD for a 200hp A3

Don't convert the prices directly - the car will be MUCH cheaper in the US.

Look at current pricing (rates from XE.com):

325i:

UK - ?25160 ($44178.95)

US - $31000 (?17650.70)

330i:

UK - ?28460 ($49981.20)

US - $37000 (?21068.74)

Mini Cooper S

UK - ?15495 ($27214.34 )

US - $20000 (?11386.50)

All are about 30% cheaper in the US, which would make the 1 series cheaper by about the same amount, judging between the price difference between the 1's and 3's, I would put the 130i at about ?26000 in the UK, and the 135ti at about ?28000.

Which would put them in the $32000 and $34,500 range in the US.

Considering the Audi A3 (not the S3, which would be the closest competitor to the 130i and 135ti) is $26000 in the US, the 1 series starts to seem a bit more affordable.

Plus, performance is more than outright power - a lot of the cars you listed are front wheel drive, which makes a big difference to real world performance across country.

In my 118d, on country roads, I have easily managed to leave a 200bhp MkV Golf GTI - on a straight drag, he would have left me for dead...

Yep but you have to remember we are talking forced induction. Its not that unusualy for a car thats turbocharged. Look at the Japanese 'supercars of the early nineties. 3000GT, Supra, Stealth, 300ZX. 3.0s with 300 or more horspower. And that's 15 years ago.

But then agian, why were they killed off?

Emissions. :)

It had nothing to do with Emissions. At least in America. More to do with the Japanese / American economy of that time. A 99 3000Gt was almost 60K. A 92 TT was almost 40K and they went up from there. The cars were overpriced in peoples eyes. Also emissions in Japan may have played a small role but I don't think so. A turbo engine in good condition isn't worse then a NA at the same size.

... Pitty i live in the UK and the prices will be what they are and thats a expensive small car. If were going into that teritory(?30,000) then we are looking at some nice cars as competition.

... Evo VIII MR FQ-340 anybody ? Id know id have one or save up more cash and look for the M3.

1 serise does nothing for me.

Well seeing as the 1 series is such a 'marmite' car i'll throw in my 2p..

I hate it.. its a horrible looking car, and there is much much better out there for the money. People only buy it because they want to be 'seen' in a BMW. Who the hell cares about handling on a non-sports car? When they advertise it as being the 'only rear wheel drive car in its class', you gotta think they are clutching at straws as to why you'd buy it over something like a MK5 Golf.. which, incidentally, i'd much rather have in 2.0 GTI DSG'd form!

But this is just IMHO. This is not a BMW bash.. I am very very fond of BMW's, not least the M3 CSL or the new M5.. and to be honest any of the larger engined 3 series, such as the 330, etc!
