Brandon
As most of you seem to be extremely anti Sempron, heres my quick review. For those of you who do not know, the Socket 754 Sempron is essententitally an Athlon 64 with either 1/2 or 1/4 the L2 cache and without the x64 extention. It still has the same single channel controller as the other socket 754 processors do, has SSE2 (newer revisions have SSE3) and the 3000+, 3100+ and 3300+ support Cool and Quiet. Based on this information, and that NO ONE really uses Windows XP x64 because of lack of drivers, I was expecting this to perform very well I bought the old Paris (besed off Newcastle) cored AMD Sempron 3100+ for $65 which runs at a speed of 9x200=1800MHz at a nice 1.4v. Running my Athlon XP 2500+ at 200x9 (it was unlocked) in Aquamark3, i got a CPU score of 6,427. With my Sempron at the same 1.8, i got a score of 8,359. The Temps idle with my AXP were 45C, while with my Sempron it was at 36C. Then i decided to overclock it. Running at the STOCK voltage of 1.4, i am able to hit 240x9 (2.16GHz) and that, it is on par with the scores for the Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester. The CPU score in aquamark3 went up to 8,932. I havent pushed any further, but X-Bit labs review had their .13u core at 2.53GHz. There are two new revisions on the market - Both codenamed "Palermo" they are manufactured on the .09u technology. X-bit labs had their sample at 2.68GHz The newer one has support for SSE3 Processor Codes - If the sempron ends in these 2 letters, this is what chip you have BX - .13u, based off newcastle BA - .09u, based off Winchester B0 - .09u based off Vince with SSE3 Ill say one thing.. for the $65 bucks i spent on this, its one hell of a chip  Semprons with the x64 extention will be released within the month from AMD

Brandon
At stock, is it faster than your AXP? 586196106[/snapback] when comparing my AXP at the normal 1.83GHz (11x166) and the sempron at 9x200 it seemed to have about a 20% advantage
chconline Veteran Posted July 11, 2005 Veteran Share Posted July 11, 2005 Because the architecture is different. Its essentially a Athlon 64 (like he said already) with less cache and no x86-64. (S754 ones only)
