A Guide to Customisation and Shell Replacements

Recommended Posts

I have seen many newbies feeling a little embarassed to ask about basics in the forums here, so i decided to write up something that educates the newbies and also apeals to the pros here. I have been writing this for over 2 weeks now, and its finally ready. I would really like it if people reading it leave comments for improvements, additions or deletions. I could not post it hre cuz its way too long and formatted. Click below to read it on my site.

A guide to Desktop Customization, Skinning and Shell Replacements

hope this is helpful

that link "A more radical interface with ObjectBar " interface goes to the second of the very first screenshots and not what is showing with the link.

-Fixed. Thanks for the inputs... i will re check all of the links to images.... damn the content management systems!!

good job! there are some apps missing like rklauncher and rocketdock in the app launcher section, dotwidget and @zpod under desktop widgets, emerge desktop and bluebox in shell replacements, shellwm in skinning, foobar2000, miranda im, trillian and qmp (to name a few) in other skinnable/themeable apps, and virtualplastic.net under skinning links, but it more complete than any other skinning guide currently availible.

Thanks for all your responses people.

Well, i know i have missed out a lot of applications here, for example if i actually had gotten into skinnable Media players, the article would have been twice the size.

What do you guys think of making this article the base content to start off a Wiki site for skinning and customisation? As far as i know, there is really NO content source on the internet that educates people on skinning and customisation. Yes the forums help a lot, but they still are not structured content. There are a lot of experts here who could help out on various parts of the content. I for one would love to do it, and since i have a few servers of my own, hosting space and bandwidth wont be an issue. However, it would be a lot of effort to set it up and would be a shame to have no or few contributers and readers.

What do you guys think about it? If there is enough entusiasm here, and a few volunteers atleast, then i could get started with it.

I am doing something similar (not a wiki though) for the BlackBox shell @ uZable.com

I think setting up a Wiki to help out people with their skinning / customizations is a great idea! Especially, if we could somehow show people how to do the neat tricks or troubleshoot common problems, solve a few gotchas, it will be a great lifesaver!

I went through your article looks great, it is a bit longish though, come to think of it. If we could use it as a base to split it into a wiki and then elaborate on the parts it would be both comprehensive and easier to read, too.

And then you could go ahead and cover the media player skins / themes, too. ;)

    • One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.
    • I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.
    • I really hope the author's health is ok. Squirreling away a official backup of this software. Looks like the internet archive already cached a copy as well - https://web.archive.org/web/20...ldbit-soft.fi/software.html
    • AMD is supported out of the box in linux because of their open source driver. Nvidia does not. All my systems are amd and all of them work nicely on linux arch without doing anything.
    • Never had a problem with TPM and started using that many years ago in Win10. Through several motherboards and OS versions, it just does what it does without complaint. My games library doesn't even know it's there. Secure boot does a lot more than support anti-cheat, as it came along long before anti-cheat software. I've used it religiously since before I started using TPM, and I always liked it for being able to nullify virus contagions that try their best to come in underneath the firmware during boot, so that the OS doesn't see them, etc. That is its purpose, imo. I'll never understand why people who elect to use another OS feel compelled to run down Windows... I guess they need to do that to feel secure about their choices? I run Windows because it supports all the software (including games) natively that I want to buy, and I've never had to run down another OS to make me feel better about it. (Although it's certainly possible to do that, of course...) Win10 is on a ventilator atm, and Win11 is very close to being free, and I finally got to stop running StartAllBack as I moved to the Experimental/Dev channel and my 26300.8553 build supports the moveable taskbar and it's running fine at the top of the screen! Finally, my last major dislike of Win11 is being rectified! So, I'm not at all surprised to see Win11's share of the Steam survey hitting 70%.
