Panthers acquire wide receiver Gardner

July 28, 2005

The Carolina Panthers have acquired wide receiver Rod Gardner from the Washington Redskins in exchange for an undisclosed 2006 draft choice and have signed fourth-round draft pick Stefan LeFors from Louisville, the team announced Thursday.

In four NFL seasons, Gardner (6-2, 213 pounds) has tallied 227 receptions for 2,997 yards and 22 touchdowns in 64 games with 61 starts. He played in all 16 contests with 14 starts for the Redskins in 2004 and posted 51 catches for 650 yards and five touchdowns. Gardner accumulated a single-game best 10 receptions for 167 yards and two touchdowns in a Week 3 match-up versus Dallas.

Originally selected in the first round (15th overall) by Washington in 2001, Gardner, 27, compiled his best campaign in 2002 when he caught a career-high 71 passes for 1,006 yards and eight touchdowns. As a rookie, he earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors after producing six catches for 208 yards, including a career-long 85-yard touchdown reception, versus Carolina in Week 6.

Gardner, who is a native of Jacksonville, FL, attended Clemson from 1997-2000 and finished his career with 166 catches for 2,498 yards and 13 touchdowns. He averaged 18.1 yards per reception on 58 catches for 1,050 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior to garner first-team All-ACC recognition.
