Spotlight and the Sidebar are two very different things.

[talking about WinFS] Its not as if they have scrapped it, its still being developed and will be available after Vista ships as an add-on in some form or other.

It's been under development for over a decade - so far it's nothing but vaporware.

Ahhhh OFS..... Them were (will be) the days! :D

I was so excited about OFS when I first heard about it, couldn't wait to get my hands on it (Cairo that is). And now the same all over again with Vista! (And that's not including he whole whistler thing)

I'd quite like to see the availabilty of an option to make it work like the dock and shrink away off the screen when not in use :|

in the previous build of longhorn you where able to hide the bar by clicking a button next to the clock

i guess they'll keep it that way

the sidebar is always on your screen

how is that an advantage? I don't need to see the weather the entire time I am on the computer.

What else can the sidebar even do?

desktop sidebar, if I remember correctly, had:

weather (why do I need to see all the time?)

email checking (konfabulator + trillian works)

a clock (apparently the one on the bottom corner isn't good enough?)

a picture slide show thing (purpose?)

stocks (can be useful, but arn't these always like 30-60 min behind?)

news feeds (could be handy I guess, but most browsers are handling RSS feeds now, and so are apps like samurize and konfabulator)

i maybe forgot features, but those are just what I remembered

there is some things that is better fr widgets, and some others for a sidebar

on the longhorn sidebar you had a dropbox where you where able to drop anything you want by drag and drop (images, text, etc)

news feeds are also something good on a sidebar

it all depends if you need a quick access to a feature then sidebar

if its only about dislpaying information then a widget can do the trick

one of the main applications for the sidebar was to have a panel for instant messaging, showing online users; another for notifications; another panel for the media player. this really is different from the type of functionality you would expect in dashboard

yea have i have that on msn explorer sidebar, pretty cool

I think it will probably be optional. If it lets use toggle it by a keyboard sequence (Alt+Ctrl+S or something), it will be really useful. many people just don't have the imagnation to see how useful this can be. Imagine an app for the sidebar that showws your CPUs temp (sor of like MBM5). Or a Desktop Search type of app that just sits there....RSS feeds would be pretty cool too. Seriously, this thing offers many possibilities. In fact, I can easily imagine a "blank" sidebar which you would fill with Widgets :p Hehe

    • Here is the new Surface Laptop Ultra wallpaper in high resolution by Taras Buria Earlier this week, Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra, its brand-new high-end laptop powered by NVIDIA's brand-new RTX Spark processor. As usual, Microsoft gives each new device a unique wallpaper, and the Surface Laptop Ultra is no exception. While the device is not publicly available yet, somebody has already extracted its wallpaper, giving everyone a chance to get a piece of the upcoming laptop in its full-resolution glory. The Surface Laptop Ultra has a very dark, abstract wallpaper that resembles the stock wallpapers in Windows Server, albeit with much less color. Having this dark, grim wallpaper highlights the laptop's mini-LED display and its ability to cut off parts of the screen's backlight to achieve OLED-like black levels. However, if you also like light wallpapers, we made a white version by simply inverting its colors. You can download both wallpapers below (click the image, right-click it, and select "Save as"): The Surface Laptop Ultra is expected to launch later this year. Microsoft is not revealing full details yet, including the price. However, Microsoft confirmed up to 1 petaflop of AI performance and RTX 5070-level of GPU performance. The heart of the laptop has up to 20 CPU cores and 6,144 GPU cores. Additionally, Microsoft and NVIDIA boast high CPU efficiency for all-day battery life. As for the display, it is a 15-inch mini-LED display with a pixel density of 262 ppi and a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits. Of course, not everyone needs this amount of power, and certainly not everyone can afford it. For those who need a more affordable device, Microsoft is also preparing the next-generation Surface Pro powered by the Snapdragon X2 Elite processor. Weeks ahead of the announcement, details about this computer were leaked by a retailer. Do you like the Surface Laptop Ultra's stock wallpaper? Share your thoughts in the comments.
