FCC may change Internet service rules

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- The Federal Communications Commission could make it more difficult for independent Internet providers to offer high-speed service

The agency, in a decision that could come as soon as Thursday, is believed to be considering an incentive for the telephone companies to build out broadband networks but also to make it more difficult for independents to offer broadband, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

The four-member FCC, split evenly between Republicans and Democrats, could vote on changing how a phone company digital subscriber line, or DSL, is regulated, making the rules similar to those imposed on cable television Internet services.

Well, big DSL providers like Verizon are unfairly being regulated on their technology while cable companies can do whatever they want, however, these bells aren't innocent either. They force people to have a landline activated in order to use DSL, though that should come to an end when FIOS is being fully deployed.

acutally, to my knowledge, this is a big factor in pushing the newer technology from the big companies. they were complaining that the deregulation of broadband hindered the growth of newer technology. if/when this is passed, companies like sbc will have no excuse not to offer cheaper prices/plans and expand their coverage.

at some point you have to realize that its these companies, verizon, quest, sbc, alltell, etc, that are taking the all the risks. they spend billions laying down the lines and offering service to homes across the US just to be told they have to lease their lines to smaller companies who, usually have horrible customer service and take no responsibility in line maintenence.

In that light it is a bit different. I would agree with the rules if the smaller companies are givin the option to pay to help the line maintenance and be still allowed to run.

    • ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE keyboard is 27% off on Amazon by Ivan Jenic The ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE is currently $159.99 on Amazon, down from $219.99. That's 27% off and $60 saved on a keyboard that combines retro and modern design, while being one of the most responsive and adaptable 75% boards available right now (purchase link down below). The ROG Falchion Ace comes with the HFX V2X magnetic switches that allow you to set actuation anywhere between 0.1mm and 3.5mm with 0.01mm fine-tuning steps. It also comes with Rapid Trigger, a feature that resets the key the moment you release it rather than waiting for a fixed reset point, which makes a noticeable difference in fast-paced games. And finally, an 8,000Hz polling rate should make the response time feel instant. The build quality is decent, with dense plastic and powder-coated aluminum, which is expected from a keyboard at this price point. There’s also the onboard adjustment wheel, which lets you tweak actuation and Rapid Trigger sensitivity without opening any software. For competitive gaming, the ROG Falchion Ace is hard to beat at this price. And those who appreciate old-school hardware, especially those white keyboards we’ve all grown up with, will likely also appreciate the looks of this keyboard. A carry case is included.
