Pink Floyd Veteran Posted August 8, 2005 Veteran Share Posted August 8, 2005 Hello all, as the title, who was or who is the greatest sportman in any sports? can be someone from football, basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, biking, golf, etc my pick is Michael Jordan. he dominated his sport like no one else I remember at his rookie year, I was in highschool I still have a giant poster somewhere of him when he has been called Air Jordan because of his 10/10 dunk at the slamdunk contest in 1988 (not sure of the date) how about you guys? IndianPimp99
While the question is a valid question it has some basic hang-ups. Are we compaing how Babe Ruth fared against baseball players and how MJ fared against basketball or are we talking how someone would fare in other sports? Lance Armstrongs body is amazing. His resting heart rate is 32!! But he said himself he would stink at ball sports because he has not hand-eye coordination. Now Dave Winfield was drafted out of college by the Minnesota Vikings despite never playing college football, The Padres which he took and the Atlanta Hawks. He was athletic enough to play three different sports competitively and so good at baseball that he never played in the minors and had a HOF career. Bo Jackson was so good at football AND baseball that I've read numerous articles claiming he would've been a sure-fire HOF in either if he just picked one and probably border-line HOF in both had he stayed healthy. Personally I think nobody dominated their sport at their time more than MJ or Ruth, however I do think putting MJ in any era would yield more consistent results than putting Ruth in others. Matrix XII
You know I'd have to say Wayne Gretzky
quigley0
hard to argue against Gretzky, but, the Babe is up there. Babe Ruth was an all-star pitcher, before he became the sultan of swat. that is like grezky being an allstar goalie, and then deciding the become the greatest scorer ever. quick
You know I'd have to say Wayne Gretzky 586346604[/snapback] Gretzky here as well. I am big fan of Lance Armstrong too, but i wouldn't put him at the top because its alot of his team that helps him out, plus the drug implications, which i don't believe are true. He is simply amazing though, no doubt about that...

costanza007
Ok the whole winning the Tour 7 times is a great feat, but Miguel Indurain did it 5 times in a row, so its not that unimaginable of an accomplishment. Maybe the best ever would be someone who excelled at several sports, like Jim Thorpe.

vincent
Now if the title of this thread asked: "who was the greatest at their sport?" Then i can give an answer but i think it needs to be changed a bit, there is simply too many great athletes past and present to say who is the greatest at sports. Snipe
Jordan was supposed to be the best athlete of all time - until he tried baseball so I don't buy it. I go with Bo Jackson. Even though he had a short career, he was the man.
