Presenting the new Neowin Logo

Recommended Posts

Please don't take this to harshly, but if you didn't want to see it, why would you click on this topic. It's pretty easy to avoid things you don't want to see, when they are titled correct. Which this one was pretty obvious.

Okay, I'm a big fan of telling people not to click something if it's just to be negative, but that gets taken too far sometimes. First off, my first thought of clicking on this topic was positive. Then I didn't much care for how it looked, which was fine, I posted what I thought honestly. There wasn't a problem until opinions started getting attacked, and we were yelled at telling us this is how it is no matter what anyone thinks. There was much too attacking of a stance taken by the staff. Secondly, this is something that will affect me eventually, so not clicking on the post doesn't really apply.

Anyway, telling someone not to click on a topic if they "didn't want to see it" only makes sense if the whole point of clicking on a topic is to share negative thoughts, which I by all means did not come into this topic with. I've replied several times, and unless you've read it all, you may not understand where I was coming from with my latest post, so don't think I just started out that way heh :p

Edit: Also, bravo lav-chan, you said that perfectly. If you post a teaser, expect opinions. If you don't want opinions, don't bother posting something 2 months ahead of time. And stop telling us what it will look like in the final theme, because, as I said before, the majority of the people here don't know what the final looks like, and this is our opinion on the logo, which is what this topic IS about.

erm vector just saw your sig and avatar and think they are sexual, base the new logo on that!!

or use bants avatar on a larger scale and minus the bant!

anyway im not bothered about the neowin logo, if it was a forum about graphic design it might be more important but seeing as its not who gives a poo

so let me get this straight...you wanted this logo posted for us to see, but you didn't want any feedback?

if that was so then it should have been posted and closed instantly and pinned.

you can't expect to post something like this and get no opinions. I just think it's funny that almost all the staff members have said they like it so much, but the majority of the members posting here say they don't like it.

the fact that you say you don't care at all what we think tells me a lot about this forum as a whole. and i honestly don't know how long it will last if you keep up with this attitude. the members here are the reason why the majority of you are even on the staff. without members you would not even be needed.

I do understand that much time was put into the designs but to disregard the opinions of everyone here and take all the comments as a complete rip on your ability is wrong. I agree that we should not judge the logo until we see it fit with the entire design, but if the full page is filled with even half the bevels and things in that logo there is no chance i will use it.

For once I agree. I was one of the few in staff who didnt like it.

Flish said that we need to see it as an overall design. As a designer I agree but I am afraid that his meaning was like "it blends perfectly because the new version its full of bevels"

Well... they've kept up with it from the beginning, which was 5 years ago, and it's only been growing, so....

...  It's their vision, I'm just the one making it for them (and trust me, on some things, our visions and styles don't sync up, and I go with what they want).  That's all.

So what Im hearing is, .. that you think it's a step backwards into some poo too?

No, I don't. What I'm saying, is that I don't want people thinking that I have 100% creative control over it, and while I have some, Steve has the final say. I quite enjoy the current mockup I have.

@adav - Nope nope nope! :p hehe

I can vouch for him, I worked at a company last year where the IT department would head up projects, but marketing would try to dictate every aspect of the design and text, you would be forced to do things against your will. In my case, marketing was wrong, they had no clue how to market to people on the web and ruined a lot of projects that would have greatly helped the company. You can argue all you want but your not going to win..

I have not been here since the beginning but to me it is just a logo. Some of you need to realize that and move on with your lives. It's sad that the simple changing of a logo could cause such a division around here. It doesn't say much for the members of Neowin or the staff for that matter. If you ask me a revamping of the site should start with removing some of the jerks and idiots that get to post here freely. Thin the herd, and then show the logo, I'll bet that the reaction will be slightly different.

On second thought who really cares? Nice logo.

Steve just wanted me to post it so everyone could see.  That's all.  No asking for feedback, it's not even implied.  I don't mind people posting their opinions, since they haven't seen the final product.  The only thing that bugs me, is people who say this isn't hard work.  I've made tons of versions of the logo and the new site, and it takes a lot of my time to get it so that Steve (and the other Admins) like it.

While it might look unprofessional, people should know that I'm a bit better at making things than I may be given credit for... I'm working for the Administrators of Neowin.  If they want a beveled black square, it's not my job to make a masterpiece, it's my job to make them their beveled black square.  Some of my style is rubbing off on the site, but when is all said and done, it's still going to be what Steve (and the other Admins) think looks good.  It's their vision, I'm just the one making it for them (and trust me, on some things, our visions and styles don't sync up, and I go with what they want).  That's all.

@The subject of feedback: I think if you posted it in a very feedback-positive forum with the subject not closed, you would presume you are going to recieve some sort of feedback anyway. If you didn't want feedback, why didn't you lock the topic and say "Feedback prohibited."

Well I personally believe if you are a designer, or have a designing responsibility of some sort, you should have a judgement on creating, editing or approving of a piece of work that appeals to both you, your client (in this case Steve it may seem), and the public in general.

I understand you are under management pressures to follow someone else's design requirements, but I've worked with very strict and bossy clients before that demanded very ugly designs, however I could still work with those constraints and think outside the box to achieve something that not only satisfies them, but everyone else who might view the design.

The moral of my post is, even if you don't have 100% of creative control over it and even when yourself think the design is not the best you could have published, there is that at least moral if not professional obligation to resolve the matter by either consulting with your client or try to push the limit of those constraints.

No, I don't.? What I'm saying, is that I don't want people thinking that I have 100% creative control over it, and while I have some, Steve has the final say.? I quite enjoy the current mockup I have.:happy:py:

Flish, ...

To start with, I mean no harm, insult or injury.

I am just speaking my mind , and by the look of this entire thread, it would seem to me at the least, the members and patrons of NeoWin sort of have a slight fear of doing that, but honestly want do that just as much.

You know Flish, It's not that the logo is horribly bad. Honestly, it is not. To me and many others (as you can see) it is a disspointment. That being said, Im sure I can speak for all of us (make that most of us), here when I say that we all appreciate the effort, time, and hard work that NeoWin has put in to make this a very structured, and well put together place.

Being a member since 02, I can say that I have enjoyed this board, it's comments, the layout, and the "bigness" of it. What I have really enjoyed however, are the people on NeoWin.

Yes, the board is YOURS. Yes, Mod's can say "This is not a democracy, it's our board .. and if you dont like it too bad" ... and thats fine, but it's like telling loyal cutomers at your hotel, that if they hate the wallpaper, and that it makes the place look pretty cheap, ... the reply is "ey, fluck you, Im the hotel moderator. If you dont like it, then leave. And by the way, you keep telling me you dont like something about the hotel? Ill just kick you out". Thats slum lord mentality.

Well, thats cool. I can always leave, and "not cause any ruckas", but untill I do, Im here, and want to voice my oppinion just like the rest of us.

I think as of late, a lot of mods have been saying things that have really opened the eyes of some members.

"Thats the way it goes, its not going to change even if you guys hate it, this is not your board it's ours, you guys are just guests, we dont care about subscribers thoughts, subscriptions are more for the users than for us ..." ... wtf mate?

And Im just picking a few of the things that have been said in the last day or two that can really make even the most die-hard fanboy ****ed off.

What kills me, is not so much the fanboy-mod wannbe-neowin defenders ... it's that they are fighting others who think that they should have a say in how the community as a whole looks. Fighting the very people that love the board and want to feel at home with it. You must understand this. You must. You have to know that a few people here visit this place more often than they do a bar, or hang out with friends even. It's a hobby, and "enthusiast" board.

I have heard mods say .. Neowinnians, Neophiles, Our community.

Well how can I be a neowinnian, if its not my home? If Im just an unwanted intruder. How anyone here can sit back, take crap for speaking their minds, say that others should shut up for it, is just stupid.

K, ... with that said, again, and you can flame me if you want, move my post, delete it, ... I expect that. But am I completely wrong here guys? Do you not want me to say a thing? Does anyone else here feel a but like that, because now Im keeping count. Lets see where you stand. Id like to see that.

The artists / designers are so talented on this board. The vast ammount of creative thinking here makes this place a mecca of ideas. To ignore them all is as one person here put it "just selfish", but more than that, just ignorant.

This is the last post Im going to make in this thread, unless asked a question or addressed directly, and even then, Im keeping it super short.

But of course ... this is all IMHO.

I am also sorry for the appalling attitudes that some have displayed in this topic.

586371855

There's no need for you to be sorry. Some people just dont have respect for the Graphics guys here at neowin, who work hard in developing the graphical interface of this site. It's a shame, it really is. Very nice flish btw, time for a

I would suggest you guys read the whole post, not just the first sentence.  Reading is great, but comprehending what you read is just as important.

Not surprisingly, this is the same thing I said but in different words.  Again, comprehension is important here guys.  The other logo's do not look better with the whole look of the page.  They may be nice individually, but they certainly do not go with everything else.

586372180

Funny that, it was my intention to post the same thing you did. With the difference being I didn't have to be so condescending to members whilst doing it...

    • Maybe it's just my old-school soul talking, but I’ve always felt that games aren't 'real' games until they hit the PC. Leaving the PC community out at launch just doesn't sit right with me. That being said, I'm probably going to buy the PS5 just for the fun of trying it out.

    • Rockstar confirms Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders begin next week, unveils cover art by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The release date of Grand Theft Auto VI has moved quite a lot since its original announcement in 2023, but it finally looks like the game has found its final launch slot. Rockstar today had a new video upload on its YouTube channel, and while it wasn't a new trailer for the game, the company revealed two things. This was the pre-order kickoff date for Grand Theft Auto VI as well as the game's official cover art. The company revealed that June 25 is when fans of the series will be able to pre-order their copy of Grand Theft Auto VI. Pre-orders will be available both digitally and in retail stores. The newly unveiled cover art shows off the two new protagonists, as well as a few more characters that are probably vital to the campaign storyline. Shots of vehicles players can use like a light helicopter, motorcycle, sports car, and speed boat are also seen here, alongside a shot of a crocodile. "Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them," says Rockstar describing the campaign's protagonist duo. "But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive." Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 on November 19, 2026. A PC version has not been confirmed yet, though it's expected by many to land after the console release. When asked about this, the Take-Two CEO says it considers the core audience for the Grand Theft Auto franchise to be on consoles.
