i've done it before, ..ages ago ;)

most window managers support the Xcomposite and Xdamage extensions now.

but about a year ago, it was a rare sight.

its in the current X.org release, you might want to look into getting the patch for KDE that allows this..

or use a real mans window manager, like fluxbox (pictured), or the new and shiny e.17 which supports it natively as well i hear.

fvwm looks pretty neat. I've been using KDE for a while and was wondering how would I be able to get fvwm to have a taskbar at the bottom of the screen and have a menu for my programs. Some window managers have multiple bars for launching programs and currently running programs. I tried xfce4, and kinda liked it, but at the same time, couldn't stand all those bars on my screen.

All of these look like simple transparencies, i'm sure he wanted some pixel-shaded effects like in Avalon.

Yes I do.

Anyone know about this screenshot, the post said he was using kde - look at the gimp...thats close to glass.

^^^ All that most "glass" effects are, is a simple transparency with some light-colored highlighting to make it seem the surface is shiny and refelective.

A true glass effect would also shift pixel positions to simulate the refraction that real glass has.

But I have never been one for the eye-candy of transparent windows of any sort.

Tried FVWM2.... didn't get anything like what is pictured in this thread. I was also not able to modify it, despite downloading and installing the themes..............

How about this:

Wow.

Yup. That uses OpenGL to do the nice refraction and other visual effects. (Y)

Looks like it uses faked transparency (only the wallpaper is used, not other desktop objects). :(

But nice hardware-rendered pixel-moves and shading!

I can top that -

Transparent konsole with transparent Window Decorations :D

It could almost tempt back to using KDE full time... ;)

-edit- DOH!! this was meant to be in the "Glass effects in linux" thread, could some nice mod please move it for me?

Must've hit reply in the wrong tab... :p:p

* Sorry, no "nice" mods online at the moment, so I moved your post for you. * ;)

fvwm has been able to do this for a long time. Here is an example:

You can round off the edges like vista by adding corner images to the window like this:
