RokN
Is there anyway to do the glass effects (vista) in gnome or kde or any wm for linux? I have searched and found no way to do this in linux  . Will a future version of gnome or kde be able to do this? Thanks Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/358282-glass-effects-in-linux/ Share on other sites
gdodson
I've seen styles that look like they have glass, but I'm not sure how to do it. edit: sorry, my "friend" has been on my computer and is making stupid posts, I finally logged out. Knight'
Yep, I've seen it done in certain builds of Metacity, way before Vista, (real) transparent window boarders and title bars. You can hunt around for that sort of thing. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/358282-glass-effects-in-linux/#findComment-586372397 Share on other sites

kingpunk
i've done it before, ..ages ago ;) most window managers support the Xcomposite and Xdamage extensions now. but about a year ago, it was a rare sight. its in the current X.org release, you might want to look into getting the patch for KDE that allows this.. or use a real mans window manager, like fluxbox (pictured), or the new and shiny e.17 which supports it natively as well i hear. dduardo
fvwm has been able to do this for a long time. Here is an example: http://fvwm-themes.sourceforge.net/screens...transparent.png You can round off the edges like vista by adding corner images to the window like this: http://oceanic.wsisiz.edu.pl/~slabosz/word...fvwmmilk2ny.jpg Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/358282-glass-effects-in-linux/#findComment-586372432 Share on other sites

Arckon
fvwm looks pretty neat. I've been using KDE for a while and was wondering how would I be able to get fvwm to have a taskbar at the bottom of the screen and have a menu for my programs. Some window managers have multiple bars for launching programs and currently running programs. I tried xfce4, and kinda liked it, but at the same time, couldn't stand all those bars on my screen. markwolfe Veteran Posted August 13, 2005 Veteran Share Posted August 13, 2005 ^^^ All that most "glass" effects are, is a simple transparency with some light-colored highlighting to make it seem the surface is shiny and refelective. A true glass effect would also shift pixel positions to simulate the refraction that real glass has. But I have never been one for the eye-candy of transparent windows of any sort. dduardo
If you really want to be picky about it and wanted a "true" glass effect modify the sourcecode and shift the pixels over like markjensen mentioned. icecaveman
What markjensen mentioned is what Microsoft does with Vista, it's called Pixel Shaders... If someone would finish any of those promising OpenGL WMs. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/358282-glass-effects-in-linux/#findComment-586372950 Share on other sites
theotherdave
FVWM looks nice, but I didn't get on with it / know where to start... Anyone fancy doing a intro to it for the "Definitive Intro To Linux Window Managers" thread? Barney T. Administrators Posted August 14, 2005 Administrators Share Posted August 14, 2005 Tried FVWM2.... didn't get anything like what is pictured in this thread. I was also not able to modify it, despite downloading and installing the themes.............. Yup. That uses OpenGL to do the nice refraction and other visual effects. (Y) Looks like it uses faked transparency (only the wallpaper is used, not other desktop objects). :( But nice hardware-rendered pixel-moves and shading!
