Rokn this -> http://2sdw.com/images/8-03-dirty.jpg is my screenshot. It uses a combination of effects. The window border is Crystal which you have found and I use kompmgr from KDE to make the inactive windows transparent.

You can also use kompmgr to make just the borders semi-transparent. The problem with this is that the window title is also made transparent and harder to see.

So avalon like glass effects are possible, it just hasn't been coded yet. I can hack away at source code, but I'm not a programmer. But I predict that these types of efeects will be perfected on Linux within the next couple of months.

You guys think too small:

I've also seen xgl run GNOME. In the next 2 years we'll see things like this for the masses, but not right now.

P.S. I think the Vista Glass effects are HORRID!

I think the Vista effects are great. They are not overstated, they look nice, they perform very quickly and they are still in a beta state.

No reason to go MS bashing for brownie points here. This is not slashdot. We are all open minded gentlemen.
