Could this be the ultimate in practicality and performance? Spotted on test in Japan, it's Mitsubishi's soon-to-be-launched Evolution IX Estate - and Auto Express's spy photographers got the first-ever pictures.

Making a surprise debut on a wet Tsukuba race track near Tokyo, ahead of its unveiling next month, the newcomer completed three fast laps before disappearing from view. Sources said the car was undergoing its final phases of testing and running back-to-back with the saloon to establish a series of quick lap times for comparison.

At the end of the day, Mitsubishi's research and development test team declared the results were far closer than expected. Originally, they'd anticipated the estate's extra 100kg bulk would add at least two seconds' time difference around the two-kilometre track.

But the gap was less than one second. According to a spokesman, the carrier's rear end actually improved its weight distribution, which gave better traction than the saloon.

Just 2,500 Evo IX Estates are to be made, and the car will only be available here as a grey import priced from around ?20,000. It shares the same chassis, six-speed manual gearbox and 2.0-litre turbocharged engine as the saloon. Expect a 0-60mph sprint time of around five-and-a-half seconds

If I did a lot of hauling of stuff, I'd choose this over the sedan. Not to mention the fact that I'd probably have a family if I ever bought this car.

20,000pounds. That's the same as the VIII MR?

I'm actually starting to like the Evo series now, but I think they're getting a little lazy with their designs. I've been pretty fanboyish with WRX STi, but don't care for their new '06 version.

All EVO's die after 15,000 miles, stuff starts goin massively wrong cos there cheaply made tin cans that go extremely fast..

i have been in an evo before u start sayin i dont know jack, it was the FQ-330, and man did it fly, 0 - 60 was in the late 3's, but they go wrong, and with the price tag it justifies why..

heck the ride they have is dreadful as well, suspo is rock solid and any bump sends u flying..

they are built for speed, not comfort, not reliabily, or drive, just speed, thats y they are cheap, cos ther crap after u start giving em hammer.

I dunno wtf yer talking about.

I have personally driven one of the first evo's to be purchased in San Antonio back in i beleive it was 01, just recently.

Its got about 50k miles on it (it being used as a daily driver AND a track car) and the thing runs better than my moms brand new gs430.

So i think i woudl ahve to say that you my friend, are either wrong, or... well... wrong
