Badge removal

Recommended Posts

I'm just wondering if any of you guys/girls can give me any advice on removing the FIAT badge and possibly the Punto badge from the back of my car? (See attached images)

My reason for wanting to remove is because it was a nice deep blue, now with time/weather it has faded to a pale mucky looking blue and looks bad in my opinion.

I've checked out some websites regarding what is behind the badge, too.

How I debadge my car?

The Punto Mk1 series had three releases:

Mk1 A (1993-1994), Mk1 B (1995-1997)

These cars can be debadged, but the rear door has some holes. You should fill the holes with an easy artwork at your garage.

Mk1 C(1998-1999)

This series can be debadged only by removing the badge which is only glued.

Mk2 (1999-2003)

All the releases of Type 188 can be debadged by removing the glued badge.

Taken from - Punto power

Ive put in bold my car year/mk.

Ive read that best tried and tested method is to use a hair dryer to slowly warm up the glue but not too much heat to damage the paint work and use some fishing line to slide between the badge and the car, hopefully taking of one of the layer of glue thus the badge coming off. Then using WD40 or some other form of rubbing alcohol to remove the rest of the glue. Then just wax up.

My fear is that I will rip half the paint work off :pinch: as Fiat Punto's are known for very thin paintwork (Which I have found out)

Any advice or tips would be great :)

I'm not for sure it will work for you.... but getting a hair dryer and warming up the badges loosens the glue. Edit: Which it says in your post. Duh.

Then very gently see if you can push the letters around... if you can... make it a little warmer until they are almost ready to fall off.

I did this to my oldsmobile, because the "Old" on my Oldsmobile logo chipped and it looked dumb with just smobile.

When I took the logo off I almost crapped my pants because you could still the the lettering on the paint. So I washed and waxed the area and it was fine afterwards. It turned out to be a build up of dirt, salt, glue, and other outside junk.

Did the same thing with my escort emblems on my old mk4.

Here is the problem before you take them off make sure theyre not pinned to the car, ie little pins that have punctured the metal so the emblem doesnt fall off.

Because if they are, yer gonna take em off, then have 2-4 holes where the emblem was.

As for what i did, was i took a razor blade and carefully went around the edges to lossen up the adhesive around it. Then once i could slip an index card inbetween i used that as a sort of buffer for when i jammed the flat head screwdriver to pry it off. Then I did what schocks did, a little googone, and some elbow grease and the area where it was, was clean. Actually cleaner than the rest of the car around it, i had to wax the car to make it match.

i did my WRX last weekend. i cant vouch for Fiat, but some cars have actual pins thats hold the badge to the trunk. so, when you get the badge off, you have 2 holes in your trunk. you might want to check a fiat board first.

hair dryer works good, a heat gun will do it a little quicker if you have one. after warming them up, get some dental floss or fishing line and saw it back and forth behind the badge to seperate it from the adhesive.

once you have it off, heat up the left over adhesive a little more with the hair dryer and then lighty scrape off as much as you can with your fingers or a nylon stick (the non conductive black sticks used in computers.) they dont scratch. the left over residue i took off with some Goo-Gone spray (the gel works better) and some paper towel.

after that, i washed the back and dried it to make sure there where no scratches or left over adhesive. took about 20 minutes

Thanks guy, If you check my post I quoted a little bit text from the Punto Power websites FAQ. Which says its just glued on and doesnt mention pin marks for my model year.

The model previous to mine says this:-

Mk1 A (1993-1994), Mk1 B (1995-1997)

These cars can be debadged, but the rear door has some holes. You should fill the holes with an easy artwork at your garage.

And mine is the Mk2 which says:-

Mk2 (1999-2003)

All the releases of Type 188 can be debadged by removing the glued badge.

I do want to do this, I just really dont want to damage my car :(

Here's what I did to my Golf:

Heat it up, a lot. Take your time over this.

Get some tooth floss and double it up. Then very slowly and gently run it back n forth under the badge.

When the badge is removed, a VERY small amount of T-cut will buff out the residue.

the proffesional way to do it is to take the badge off  then fill in the holes with special filler then sand it down and then re-spray the sanded area :p

According to my resources all Mk2 Punto's badges are Glued on with no Pins.

go to a local body shop. They can then take the blame if anything happens :)

Hmmm, That has crossed my mind but how much would it cost? And I have no idea where my local 'Body Shops' Is ;)

Also, is there any insurance problem with removing badges?

Shouldn't really affect the insureance what so ever. Only if you where to claim aggainst the insureance if damage is done to the car. Then they may not pay for any damage.

Damage while removing the badges or damage as if I got hit by a car and then they found out I had removed the badges and then they wouldnt cover me?
