Nintendo Revolution Controller Revealed

Recommended Posts

I'm not concerned about the "small hand-big hand" issue at all. my point is that swinging, aiming, etc. burns a lot more calories than just  moving your fingers (traditional controllers).

Well before the thread got moved I meant to say people don't seem to mind activity when it comes to games. DDR, Donkey Konga, the game with the rattles, and arcades lately almost every involves some sort of activity (snowboard, skiiing, putting out fire with a firehose, shooting a gun, etc.). In Japan they have even crazier games that involve more movement, this controller should be second nature to them.

I think the video they showed could be a little exagerrated. It could turn out you will need to be making such strong movements with controller. It seems like it will depend on the sensitivty of the controller. Similar to pressure sensitve buttons and a boxing game for instance. You don't need to push really hard to throw a strong punch, a slighlty stronger push of the button will only be required.

This controller looks AMAZING!

One of the things I really dislike with current game consoles is their control. I love Zelda, but found the newer 3D ones hard to control. The Revolution has certainly solved that problem... no more annoying button combinations and 3 different directional controls (D-Pad, Analog, C), I'm lining up for pre-orders!

Add the fact that you can still plug-in GameCube controllers and play all GameCube games... and heck, even access Nintendo's backlog all the back to NES. I love how the controller on the side even looks like the original NES controller.. would just need a shell for SNES.

Controller accessories should also be MUCH cheaper. A DDR pad just has to communicate with the Revolution controller and doesn't have to have its own wireless connectivity... so specialized controllers of these types should be much cheaper.

I was just thinking about zelda, and how awesome it would be to swing the cotroller and see Link swing his sword in the exact same way. God, that would be perfect. But yeah, I do hope that this controller isn't used to make gimmicky games like with the DS. Yes the DS has a lot of games that do use the touch screen well and to its full potential, but there are also many others that just use it for stupid little puzzles or something that pop up every now and then for example.

Im going to sit on this but seams a little like Nintendo are making things overcomplicated when console gaming is sposed to be the oposite of that.

Im going to wait and see what comes up over time. Just not enjoyed as much the last few nintendo consoles as much as the older ones.

How is it overcomplicated? A 5 year old could use it properly.

Nintendo is the only one keeping things simple where as Sony & Microsoft seem to adding as much as they can to their respective consoles.

I like this quote the best:

Eurogamer: How is the controller going to work with games that aren't designed specifically for the Revolution - multi-platform titles and so on?

Jim Merrick: We're producing a classic-style expansion controller, based on traditional designs like the Gamecube controller. It's like a shell with a hole in the top into which you slot the freehand-style controller, and then you can play third-party ported games, and retro Nintendo games you've downloaded.

So there's that option - but even while it's inserted into the classic-style shell, the freehand controller will still be able to sense positioning and so on, so there are more options too.

It's something that's just as true for the DS - not every game uses the DS's unique features. But some multi-platform titles do, like The Sims 2 for example. We hope other developers will do the same and look at ways their multi-platform titles can make use of the Revolution's features.

I hope they put this classic style shell in with the Rev, would round off a complete package imo.

This controller is becoming more and more like Voltron.

Biggest selling point right there, the ability to use a more traditional controller outside of the GC one (though that does save me money).

Thats why there are different colored ones. You just put them all together and they create a giant mech suit that you can climb into to play Mario with.

OK might not be the best of words, but when I wanna a game its to relax and entertain. Just slump out with a pad and veg for a bit, not flail my arms arround for a while.

But im not saying its the worst idea in the world, im just on the fence for now, going to see what it is like before I make up my mind.

I hold my TV remote for like 4 hours watching football games because I always flip to other games between commercials.

Video was uped to IGN, better quality: IGN

that video show the bottom 2 buttons as X & Y... i dont kno if anyone noticed that but i thought it was just a & b... (at the end of the video when he turns off the power)

I agree with everyone saying that this controller is a lot simpler than Xbox360's and PS3's.

It's the year 2006. Let's say your friend, Dad, cousin, or whatever wants to play a game on your PS3 or Xbox360. You must first tell him how to play the game, this button to aim, then use the analog to move your gun, then press this other button to shoot blablabla.

But with the Revolution, you'll just have to say: hold this as it was a gun and shoot with the B button.

just kinda dawned on me that this will be one of the first controllers for both left and right handed players.

Yeah I noticed that, good for the left-handed people out there.

Anyway this thread is funny, battle of the fanboys.

After thinking about it, it's a very nice idea. However, now it's about the games. Nintendo better back it up with some good franchises (Metroid, Zelda, still trying to think how a Mario title will work with it - unless 'jumping' with the remote is actually in the game). They'll also need good 3rd party support with good ideas *cough*DS*cough*. So yeah, I'll buy one once they put it to good use. I just hope that non-games don't dominate Nintendo's product library, which would suck for us regular gamers.

The photoshopping has begun again even after we have the actual controller. People are now starting to think of the possiblities attachments could be added to the controller:

I was thinking, if developers start making attachments such as baseball bats, golf clubs, or tennis rackets that could plug into the controller this could singlehandedly be one of the greatest devices. Selling attachments alone could make companies alot of money.

oh no no no no, photoshopping. Now more pics will appear and who can tell if its real or fake. Like we need to battle some more over pics.
