Neowin Exclusive 5th Anniversary Set

very very nice. kudos!

i was gonna post the custom table i built for my setup, but i don't have them available right now. and my computer is packed up for my move. it was all finished like yours is, but it was something to keep everything in check. my roommate and myself combined all of our DJ equipment and we had to make something to keep it all organized. but it's no more, because i'm moving. when i get my computer up and running, i'll post pics. also, on my myspace page, it has links to my mixes, BUT they're links to my FTP, which is of course down for now.

This was a question among other mods and admins right off the bat so I will answer in the same fashion as I did with them.

Basically, the songs are all purchased or licensed in some form to me.  There is a gray area with this type of music and the ability to play it publically.  Technically, every live-to-air broadcast over the web, satellite, or FM stations is bending the rules of copywrite infringement.  However, it is not illegal.

Since the music I am using is put together into a mixed compliation, the rights are therefore put onto me.

I am in no way making any money from this set or distributing it TO make money so that proves the legality issues as well.

Also, like I said: it is a mixed compilation.  If I were releasing the tracks individually as their own or in a form that could be broken up, we may have some issues.  But I'm not.  This is a private mix to be released for promotional use only, as with any mix compilation that is ever released.

Same goes with anything from BBC's Radio 1, ETN.fm and their torrent downloads, DI.fm's downloadable sets, ID&T, etc...

Hope that explains things enough ;)

Ummm ... not exactly. Those big sites get their downloads authorized by labels/DJs/producers before distributing a mix. While some labels have less strict policies in place regarding this kind of thing, many (i.e. Anjunabeats) specifically forbid any of their releases being offered in mixes like this. Also -- BBC, ETN, DI.FM, ID&T, etc. all pay broadcasting royalties to BMI, SOCAN, ASCAP, BUMA, STEMRA, etc. etc.. Else, it's copyright infringement. End of story.

I see. So any DJ who's posting links on their page to a personal set should be locked up for copyright infringement? Same thing would then apply to any Live-To-Air broadcast via FM radio as they do not pay rights as much as you claim they do (save stations like BBC).

I would then assume that passing along a demo to another DJ to evaluate their performance would then be dubbed illegal.

Or even sending out promotional copies of a new track, illegal.

There are so many gray areas that are being bent with DJ culture these days. Notice every vinyl you have (including the 4pack Tiesto LE) says right on it not to be used for distribution. So anytime you were to play it live on radio it technically breaches that contract. However it's done all the time, and even the RIAA knows that this goes on. It is no infringement and it is not illegal. Not to mention I provided a full tracklisting of all songs included so if anybody likes the tracks they can purchase them on their own.

Also be aware that I have contacted many of the artists that this was to be released on this website and received about 90% approval rate, the rest have not returned my e-mail.

Downloading now. Rarely touched this genre but this time for the sake of Neowin and [NFC]Wave, take a look and perhaps I will love it. :) Thanks for your hard working.

Hahaha, hopefully we've reeled another one in boys ;)

I downloaded it and I'm a little past 60 minutes into listening to it. Wow, good timing because just now (as I was typing this) it hit a song that I like quite a bit.

I'm not usually a fan of this style of music (and listening to this bit hasn't really "converted" me) but I still have enjoyed it. Cool stuff, thanks!

    • RevPDF 4.5.0 by Razvan Serea RevPDF is a free, fully offline PDF editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux that lets you edit text and images directly inside PDF files — no internet connection, no account, and no cloud uploads required. Unlike bloated alternatives that demand subscriptions and constant connectivity, RevPDF fits in under 60MB on desktop while delivering a complete editing toolkit: annotate, redact, sign, compress, split, merge, convert, and reorganize pages, all processed locally on your device. Smart font matching ensures edited text blends seamlessly with the original, and multi-language support includes RTL scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew. Where most PDF editors force you to choose between features and simplicity, RevPDF manages both. You can build interactive forms from scratch with text fields, checkboxes, and dropdowns, permanently redact sensitive data before sharing, draw freehand on contracts and diagrams, and add custom watermarks — all without a single file leaving your machine. Edit Text and Images Directly Inside PDFs RevPDF supports true inline PDF editing — not just annotation layers on top of a document, but actual modification of existing text and images within the file. A smart font-matching engine identifies the font used in the original document and applies it automatically when you make edits, so changes blend naturally with the surrounding content. You can reposition elements, resize images, and update text across single pages or entire documents. RevPDF 4.5.0 release notes: This is one of the biggest updates to RevPDF yet. A lot of things people have been asking for are finally here. New Features Auto Redaction Permanently redact sensitive text and areas from your PDFs before sharing. Clean, irreversible, and fully offline. Comments, Links & Bookmarks Add comments for review, insert clickable links, and create bookmarks to jump around long documents without scrolling forever. Find & Replace Search across the whole document and replace text in one go. Long overdue. Split Pages Vertically or Horizontally Split any page down the middle, vertically or horizontally. Perfect for scanned books or double-page spreads. New Drawing Tools More tools for freehand drawing and markup, better for annotations, sketches, and detailed notes. Continuous Scrolling in Editor The editor now scrolls continuously through pages instead of jumping between them. Working through long documents is a lot smoother now. PDF Metadata Editor View and edit the metadata stored inside your PDFs, including title, author, subject, and keywords. Better Font Matching Text edits now blend in more naturally by doing a better job of matching the original font. Tabbed PDF Viewer Open multiple PDFs at once in tabs and switch between them without going back to the home screen. Add Links Insert hyperlinks anywhere in your PDF, to external URLs or to other pages within the document. Share & Print Shortcuts Share or print directly from the editing screen, home screen, and viewer. No extra steps. Minor Updates Paste images directly from clipboard into your PDF New image editing tools for more control over images inside documents Bug Fixes Fixed file saving issues on Windows and Linux Everything still works fully offline. • Interesting. I'm not using a VPN with my phone. I tried though my home internet (Rogers) and my cellular internet (Telus) using their respective DNS servers and both trigger the dialog above.
