Sony CEO talks PSP TV

05/10/2005 10:52

Sony CEO Howard Stringer has revealed some of the company's future plans for the PSP and PS3, describing the next-gen console as "a monumental technical advance."

In a speech delivered at the CEATEC electronics show in Japan, Stringer said that PSP owners "Will soon be able to deploy the device's built-in Wi-Fi to watch video from home entertainment terminals, anytime, anywhere in the world."

He also confirmed that larger capacity memory sticks will enable users to record television programmes using digital video recorders and then watch them back on the PSP. Some DVR models already come equipped with memory stick slots.

Moving on to the PlayStation 3, Stringer described the console as "Our biggest breakthrough yet."

"The Cell microprocessor really sets the PS3 apart... Offering twice the processing power of Xbox 360. It's simply amazing in a home entertainment device."

"The PS3 is only the beginning, but it is a monumental technical advance."

Stringer conceded that Sony had "fallen short" when it came to performing strongly in the competitive electronics market - the company is expecting its first operating loss in more than a decade this financial year due to losses in its TV sector and costly restructuring expenses.

"We must free ourselves from the old ways that bind us," he said.

"We must restructure to improve efficiency, improve our focus and provide the necessary resources to create unique, competitive advantages."

Stringer added that his vision for Sony is "One that is streamlined in terms of product lines, manufacturing and efficiency... We will become a more nimble, responsive and creative company with a better relationship with the public."

You know what you said doenst even compare. You stated an opinion, he stated a fact, its either 2x faster or it isnt and we will have to wait to see. Sony invested billions and billions in the cell microprocessor and you know im just surmizing its going to be a little better then the xbox360 setup. The ps3 is infact going to beat the xbox360 in almost all catergories..and yet most people have accpected that or dont care and just point to graphics now. I dont know whats gonna be the difference between the graphics we have to wait for the games to come out and after ahwile im pretty sure we will know the difference.

nothing against you,

...almost all catergories...

586627796[/snapback]

but enlighten me on these categories.

As far as I know, Sony doesn't have something equivalent to XBOX Live. Although I guess there are individual services, there is nothing that compares to unified approach of XBL. If you ever played on XBL, or even on XBConnect, you will see my point.

The advantages of cell are up in air. I am not going to start on hardware advantages since I don't know anything about it.

But based on what I read on Tom's hardware & ArsTechnica, both are similar in raw performance and there are few areas where they lead each other. (exactly what Microsoft has been saying).

Now if my memory serves me, physics is one "category" where PS3 will lead. right ? what are others ?

(This is a very honest question, don't take it as my bitching against PS3 please :D )

Well when I said most catergories I was talking about the hardware aspect. You can look them over here. Now if you look it over you will see the ps3 beats the xbox360 in basically all those specs. As I said before most people really dont give a damn, because in my opinion they just wanna compare graphics with graphics. Yes sony doesnt have anything on xbl or xbconnect, I stopped playing ps2 games online after using xbox live. Im pretty sure sony has something up its sleve even if its just a "copy" of xbox live I would be more then satisfied but I can sense the outrage already ha. The next and only other advantage I see is the hd the xbox has but then really that isnt advantage since microsoft decided to make to different verisons of xbox360 instead of making it standard, and now I wonder if game developers are going to incorporate it in there game more then just getting updates. So I would like your opinion dhan, besides xbox live what other advangates do you feel the xbox360 will have over the ps3?

i'm more interested in how much more powerful the GPU is, rather than the CPU... theres a limit to how nice you can have the physics engine working, but the graphics can always look nicer...

well lets put it this way. RSX is as powerful as G70 with a higher clock, lower memory bandwidth, turbocache and flexIO connection while Xenos is as powerful as a X1800 XT with 1 GB of Ram and higher memory bandwidth + directx 9.5 API

'faster' is a very very generic term. numbers dont always mean anything, and on paper, the cell might be 'faster'...but as all have seen with normal processors, the numbers and specs on paper dont mean a lot anymore...a 3ghz Athlon, 3ghz P4, 3ghz PPC all have hugely different performance jumps. its about the real world tests

"The ps3 is infact going to beat the xbox360 in almost all catergories"...you are stating your opinion as a fact...not good to do :)

Um..That is a fact ps3 will be better in most catergories and it can be proved.

Edit: I mean Hardware catergories btw.

Obviously you are not use to Sony's lies. Sony is a hype machine. They spend more on hype then they do on development and that is the reason why anytime they do a PS3 demo you have 1000 people in the crowd calling bull**** because they did the same exact thing with PS2

Also beating another system in "theoretical" ops is not the same as being twice as fast.

Theoretically the cell processor could be twice as fast as the Xbox360's power PC processor(s), but noone has any clue on how to write code for a cell based processor which was one thing that developers also disliked about the ps2.

Lack of developers familiar with the coding means lack of efficient coding which means wasted processing power.

That is why games on consoles get better over time, because the devs have learned to take advantage of them. In the case of the Xbox360 the architecture while being "new" is based off of current technologies that many developers are familiar with (PPC, DX, etc) this makes it much easier to write efficient code from the get go.

ok, and with those figures you just gave OS, which of the two systems clearly had better graphics?

Yep, that's right everybody, XBOX.

Reason being, is that devs took the easy route out of programming for the PS2 which was stated just as the PS3 is, DIFFICULT TO DEVELOP FOR.

Wait and see... just wait and see.

HAHAHAHAHA...you know what's really funny. All you have to go by is what Sony tells you. They havent shown a playable version of the PS3 at anything, nor do they even have a final controller set in stone.

Here's the deal. I do admit the PS3 will most likely be more technically advanced, but you know what, IT WONT MATTER. The Xbox 360 is already advanced to the point where developers probably wont be able to utilize it to it's full potential for a while, so the PS3 wont be far ahead anyways, no matter what they put in it.

Second, they're gonna put all this stuff in, but stuff costs money. Almost everyone complained about the Xbox 360 pricing, and if PS3 is supposed to be so expensive, that's not going to help.

Last, hardware doesnt meant crap. To prove the point, anyone could name games that run on PS2 and Xbox that are worse than the original Mario game. Nobody complains about the graphics, or how the game runs at all, because its a good game.

On a side note, Xbox 360 has Xbox Live backing, and now that MS made a free version, Sony will really have to pull something to counter that.

Yay a free version that doesn't let you play online when you want to.

PS3 comes out after the Xbox 360 and will most probably be more expensive. So it would be strange if it isn't at least a little bit more powerful.

I know what people say about sony and yet I could care less. I dont judge people by their "cover". This is now that is then, you may call me foolish because most of the time you judge by their "cover" your right but there might just be 1% your not and thats enough.

All I can say about the demo part is the mgs4 demo, do you have anything to say about that?

As I've been saying I know people dont care about specs, they only care about graphics vs graphics, and over time we will see the difference.

    • TeraCopy 4.0 Build 28 by Razvan Serea TeraCopy is a compact program designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed, also providing you with a lot of features. Copy files faster. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives. Pause and resume transfers. Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click. Error recovery. In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skips the file, not terminating the entire transfer. Interactive file list. TeraCopy shows failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only problem files. Shell integration. TeraCopy can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual. TeraCopy is free for non-commercial use only. For commercial use you need to buy a license. The paid version of the program includes the following features: Copy/move to your favorite folders. Save reports as HTML and CSV files. Select files with the same extension/folder. Remove the selected files from the copy queue. Features added since version 3.17: Enhanced speed graph. New multi-threaded copy engine. Support for copying to multiple targets. Queue system for managing multiple copy operations. Support for receiving files via the LocalSend protocol. TeraCopy entry in the modern Windows Explorer context menu. Integrated toolbar in the title bar. Why receive LocalSend transfers with TeraCopy? Handle file conflicts: Skip, overwrite, or rename files when a file with the same name already exists. LocalSend always creates another copy, which can waste time and disk space, especially when resuming an interrupted transfer. Filter unwanted files: Apply ignore lists or remove files manually before accepting a transfer, so unnecessary files are not downloaded. Better performance on fast networks: In tests over a 10 Gbps connection, TeraCopy received files several times faster than the standard LocalSend app on Windows. TeraCopy 4.0 Build 28 changelog: Fixed a bug where Overwrite behaved as Overwrite All during same-drive move operations. AdvancedInstaller fixed the installer’s security vulnerability: EXE Bootstrapper resolved the %appdata% location incorrectly for the System account.
