PSM: Five Ways the Playstation 3 Will Change Games

Recommended Posts

the guy who pointed out piracy is a bad thing for ps3. what are you thinking? playstation used piracy to sell consoles an this is the reason xbox is number 2 and gamecube is number three. its because people want to know especially third world or wherever that they can mod their systems and pay $5 a game rather than $75. Its a 2 way street, the piracy affects game developers but it sells systems so ultimately they(game developers) have to release it on the biggest user base hoping to get some kind of sales.

XBox and PS2 pros (IMO)

Xbox

1. Better graphics

2. XBox Live

PS2

1. Better game library

2. Better controller

It seems to me that XBox fixed the game library and controller thing (boomerang looks like it sucks) and made Live free (limited I know). This is coming from a PS2 fanboy (possible XBox convert)

Only one question about XBox 360. These are the specs I've seen and with the 1st and 3rd numbers being ~ 22 GB/s, wouldn't that be a HUGE bottleneck for the 2nd or are they not directly related.

Memory Bandwidth

- 22.4 GB/s memory interface bus bandwidth

- 256 GB/s memory bandwidth to EDRAM

- 21.6 GB/s frontside bus

The memory controller is on the GPU  so it's very different from most systems, plust they have very good (At least on paper) proprietary technology to compress data to make up for bandwith.

ROFL

unless u r drunk, there is no way PSxx controller is better than XBOX S Controller. They fixed the monster controller long time back with S.

many of these PS3 claims are really forcing me to think of it as BS3

1. Price has not been announced.

2. Proof? And its' better to insist that the developers make use of all the features than let them do they're own thing only to come out with halfassed launch titles (You cannot argue that some of those games don't look like they're from XBOX)  like Microsoft did. Sony pretty much has the Japanese 3rd party market in it's hards except for one or two companies (Team NINJA). And hey, who makes more games, the Japanese or the rest of the world?

3. PS3 is more technologicly advanced than the 360... which makes the 360 more prone to be outdated.

4. Piracy is the same for the 360?

5. Er... 1. PS3 and its' feature haven't been fully announced yet, I don't really think you can accurately say what its' capabilities are. 2. NR is impressive, it's going a totally different direction from the 360 and Microsoft. 3. Please don't underestimate Kutaragi. Sony, on their first crack at a console totally outdid Nintendo and Sega. The next gen Sony killed Sega and brought Nintendos sales to a fifth of theirs. 4. I will agree 360 roxxors at the software, but it is to be expected, Microsoft is a software company, eh?

586683679

1. But just read around; the tech used in the PS3 is much more expensive than the Xbox 360.

2. -

3. Says who? You? The Xbox 360 is just as powerful or even more. Remember that Sony LOVES to hype without backing up.

4. If the PS3 includes a hard drive, then piracy is more prone toward the PS3.

5. a) Exactly. It keeps changing features because Sony doesnt have anything stable right now. b) Nintendo's console is impressive? If it was so impressive, why do we hear more news about the 360 and the PS3?. c) The difference is that now they are facing a company with a HUGE budget that can do more or less what ever they want. And Sony pays Microsoft; remember that too. d) It could become with this a console company as well.

One more thing I remind all of you: Sony is doing very bad economically right now. There are alot of questions as if Sony's budget can really deliver all this talk. Another thing; all of Sony's software is written for Windows. Which is made by who? :o Microsoft :o

In a sick way Sony is also paying to make the Xbox 360 :p

.

PS3 is supposed to have a ethernet port 10x faster than 360s? I heard that somewhere,

586683840

Its 1 in port I think and 2 out ports. Its suppost to act like a hub/switch or something.

But they speak the truth.

586685527

Because you say so? Right.

I as a Xbox user use the PS2 controller on my Xbox; Its alot better than the current Xbox controller.

To end this, this article is total bull****. All of this (at least on the Xbox) is currently more than possible. The PS3 wont do this; Devs do.

Just to comment on a few of those.

1. Sony MAKES most of the expensive hardware (CELL, Bluray), so obviously, it is cheaper. Microsoft on the other hand, has all its' components made because it is not a hardware company. Therefore, I believe that Sony can put in more expensive hardware with a price on par with Microsoft because they manufacture most of their own hardware.

4. To tell you the truth, I think PS3 will not include a harddrive because the 360 is not coming without one standard. Sony probably would have put in one if the 360 did come with one standard though.

5b. I really don't think it's fair to judge Nintendo right now, they're obviously not participating in the hype war going on between Sony and Microsoft, and so far, the Revo looks the last console to get out of the gate.

And about the huge budget comment you're right. But you have to understand, even if Microsoft has 5 Billion in the bank ready to support 360, they want to make profit so obviously they want to spend less money on the 360's hype, advertisment, and hardware than the 360 will generate so they get something out of it.

By technologically advanced I pretty much meant new technology, while Microsoft stuck with mostly developed technology, except for the GPU.

And about the piracy comment, yes that did sell more XBOX's becuase people wanted to mod it into a media center, or use it for other purposes. Piracy could very well be a good thing as much as it's a bad thing.

that's some funny ****... 5 ways sony will take existing technologies, and attempt to brand them as their own would be a better way to put this.

> 1. The End of the "disappearing act"

there are games that already do persistance, and do a better job than the ps3 will ever do purely because of the less restrictive hardware limitations (no guaranteed capacity hard drive, very restrictive memory (lack of hard drive paging), for example). When ultimately full on persistance this isn't necessarily a good thing, it can cause a lot of clutter in games which use it purely because they can. case in point, wow's dead player bodies which exist for around a week - try visiting a test realm one time. hurrah.

ultimately this is a game design decision

> 2. Great minds think alike

we've heard it all before, and for the most part ai always ends up being ****ty, because it gets compromised in favour of things which are more resource intensive, and more apparent to the player... eg visuals. no matter how good your console this is always the case. you feign ai or cut back on the percentile of the resources that ai use, and you throw more polys, particles, effects, or shaders at the rendering engine. ai is always something that's subjective, and far harder to tweak than, say for example, the rendering of a player. the more complex it becomes the longer this process will take, adding long periods to development lifecycles - perhaps for this reason expect to see some nice ai api's emerge in the next year or two. granted, we'll see better ai on the ps3 than on the ps2 but that's not really anything to boast about.

> 3. Uncanned animation

the description here sounds more like rag doll + more frames of mocap or hand created animation.

Maybe it was described in basic terms for the audience, but a more complicated way of animating character animation would be procedural animation techniques - eg. to have a character run, walk, and create a smooth transition from walking and running you don't have 3 distinct animations (as would be the case with older games), but rather a definable movement speed, with various parameters which define exactly how the character moves - or even a more basic example of combining walking and running animation to get a gradual speed increase/decrease. Even including physics aspects in to procedural animation isn't difficult - eg having players seemingly trip over geometry objects. Sadly, ps3 will not change the face of games in this way because it already exists in many current gen games, and games coming on xbox360 - eg, if the job adverts for rare appearing in edge magazine a couple of years ago are anything to go by you can expect to see complex procedural character animation in their games.

> 4. Never been there, never seen that

as said, this really is based on the amount of time that developers have to create games. this is one area you could say microsoft have let themselves down. but maybe not when you consider the production costs, development timescales, passed on costs to consumers, and the cost of hardware and media to actually play the games... vs the amount of games that will make full use of that space.

> 5. Interacting in newer, better ways

> In theory: More processing power will take the capabilities of the EyeToy and voice recognition to new levels.

sure, if there's a hd eyetoy, or a three dimensional equivelant coming out this would be an interesting prospect - however it's certainly not limited to ps3 hardware. make no mistakes, a cell processor is not required to do motion detection on a cheapass webcam. or to do voice recognition.

> 60 Frames Per Second, Standard

considering alot of the xbox versions of ps2 games already **** all over ps2 framerate it is nice to see sony admitting this is a must. Whether or not they'll stick to it is a totally different prospect - i suspect not, especially not later on in the platform's life cycle if any of the past 3-4 generation of consoles is anything to go by.

Obviously this list would serve for any system (besides the blu-ray branding), but the thing I found the most funny was the "Never been there, never seen that". A game has to be released to start making money. You think a company will spend years creating a whole world or worlds just for a "Hey, that tree looks different now!" It would be economic suicide.

Also, this is from Playstation Magazine wish list. They hope future games would have this.

It's not a bottleneck at all. It's probably the Xbox's greatest hardware advantage.

The 256GB/sec bandwidth is what's available to the GPU's embedded DRAM. It serves as a super-ridiculous-fast framebuffer, and even includes logic inside the memory that helps with Anti-Aliasing operations.

It's what allows the X360 to do amazing HDR and Anti-Aliasing at the same time without breaking a sweat.

How the hell could they just spit this out of there mouth.  Almost everything they said is  up to the developers.  They have very little power of how games are made.

586686245

Well there's a nice XBox newstory from a MS spokesperson saying the PS3 might not come out until 2007. So both sides are flinging BS around.

The PS2 controller feels good overall, but the XBOX controller feels much, much better for FPS games.

Ahhh, but a mouse and keyboard does so much more than either of the consoles can do in FPS games. I can't even go back to them on the consoles after playing on the computer.

How can you claim the PS2 controller is better? The anolog sticks are placed like they are secondary, it's tiny and it's non ergonamic design. way to small. XBox controller S is better and the x360 controller APPEARS to be the best controller ever designed.

Yes we all know how much you love Microsoft and the XBOX.

Hell, you went to 80% warning level just to defend it!

    • I like to reminisce about the good old days, way back in autumn 2025 when building a gaming machine was fun and the drives were about $150 when you caught a deal. Yes duh, back in the day we had it gone. Then baby Skynet came along, hiding in AI datacenters demanding more processing power until it reached singularity. End of a not totally fictional story.
    • My experience in the past with older Windows 11 builds was not great on unsupported machines but I recently used Rufus to put the latest build on a older 5th Gen Core Thinkpad T that we upgraded with a SATA SSD and 8GB of RAM four years ago when hardware was reasonable and it seemed pretty fast and solid. Customer is very happy with the performance and will probably get four more years out of that venerable laptop that he loves so much. Another customer just retired his Dell Studio laptop from 2009 running Windows 10. It got an SSD over 10 years ago and did everything he needed it to for 17 years but he also retired last year and is happy doing everything on his iPad now.
    • Apple's newest AirTag 2 gets first big discount by Taras Buria In late January 2026, Apple introduced its second-generation AirTag trackers, bringing a refresh to the old model that has been on the market for half a decade. Now, you can get these new trackers at an all-time low price, thanks to the first big discount that brought the price down by 17% on Amazon. While the second-generation AirTag looks identical to its predecessor, it packs meaningful upgrades inside. The second-gen ultrawideband chip works 50% farther than the original AirTag, allowing you to detect lost items in a wider range. In addition, the second-generation AirTag features an upgraded Bluetooth chip for extended range and a significantly louder speaker (up to 50%) so that you can hear it better when locating a lost item. Note that the second-gen AirTag only works with iPhones and iPads that run iOS/iPadOS 26 and newer, so you need a compatible device to use the tracker. Like the original AirTag, the AirTag 2 is available in two packs: one and four pieces. Both are now available at a notable discount on Amazon, and you can purchase them using the links below. Can't stand such takes as Spotify's: "Spotify's CEO recently pushed back against listeners who call AI music "slop," urging people to stop using the term and instead embrace the creative potential of AI music."

Besides, where are all the Trump epigones who were stating that the tariffs were going to paid by foreign companies and not the US citizens? …
