What I did was: plugin a head/earphone, disable backlight/EQ/soundcheck, set it to shuffle mode (so it uses the HD with each song) and watched how long it took for the iPod to run out of battery life. If the results are disappointing, you can go back to Apple with it. :) Edit: What I know from my iPod 4g is (haven't received my 5g yet) that the first few blocks of the battery meter go really fast but the last block lasts really long. Sometimes I ran almost an hour on the last block remaining. Keep also in mind that the more you press the iPod's buttons (play/pause/next/back etc.) the more energy it uses.
