Symphony OS

Recommended Posts

It looks ok. :-/ Never used Linux myself though, as just finding a distro is so confusing.

I'm all for the Open Source community, and the developement of GNU/Linux Operating Systems, but I think there comes a point when there are too many. If they concentrated on about 5 of them (as some of you were saying that different distos have different purposes), it might be better.

Linux won't conquer the general home user unless it is less confusing. I get lost just trying to find a distrubution, which puts me off actually using the OS. If its that hard to get hold of a copy, how do I know it will be any easier to use? With Mac or Windows, at least I know where I stand when it comes to choosing the OS...

ok...the Mock ups you have posted...they're JUST MOCK UPS RIGHT BECAUSE HOLY F**** GOD! THAT LOOKS AMAZING....ok...please..tell me those are mock ups and when you actually install it it DOESN'T LOOK LIKE THAT...because..wow...

The mock ups are just mock ups. This is't even Beta 1, it's just Preview 1 (pre-beta). When you start it up it looks more like the screenshots, don't know if I posted the link. It still needs a lot of work, and hopefully when the final version is out it will look like the mock ups because they are amazing

Check out DistroWatch

Looks cool, and from a usability perspective too. :)

Yes, they are mockups as the first post said, so don't download anything if you aren't interested in other parts of the OS.

Anyway, good to see innovation beyond transparent window borders. ;)

I thought so...but gonna run this Live CD anyways...see what this is about..

will be keeping an eye out for this development...

Exactly. And also its good to know I'm not the only one that likes the console over the DE still. I'm hardly even in the DE unless I'm using my nix boxes to do something that actually requires it.

586741469[/snapback]

Well, I'm always in the DE, because I use mine as a desktop. I do however prefer to configure things in the terminal, because its just so ...easy. But, since I'm in the DE for 99.9999% of the time that my computer is on, there is no point to a login screen :D Speaking of which, X has been running for 117 hours 12 minutes 19 seconds :D

.....and someone would choose this over Windows XP because?

Please, don't start. People have their reasons and we don't need another windows vs. linux vs. mac vs. everything else thread.

Anywho, I don't like the massive amounts of general-purpose distros popping up. Now, I see the need for specialised distros, but there are way too many "normal" distros out there. The linux community needs to come together, not segregate. Poeple come to linux and are overwhelmed with choices. And even though linux is about choice, there is such thing as too much choice.

Apparently it's just impossible for Linux to look good.  I've never seen anything that looks good yet, and this Symphony OS impresses me even less than KDE and Gnome do.  Keep Linux on the servers, where it belongs.

Mmmk. I'll take the look and functionality of my linux desktop over the windows one anytime, thanks.

Yeah, I've looked through lots of threads like that.  I've never once seen a Linux desktop that I thought looked good.

As a Windows XP user, I'd have to say that most default desktops that come with Linux distros look much better than the (in my OPINION) ass quality blue XP Luna and Bliss wallpaper. Customization is bliss.

On topic, I actually like this distro. As a matter of fact, I'm typing this post through FF in this distro. Though I detest the idea of the desktop rendered using Mozilla's components (gecko?), but it's definitely experimenting with something different with its UI.

I can say this will be a nice OS to play around with, but it will be some time before people can completely switch over to it.

I cant seem to find any information on their website about which platform this run on.

Does it mean its for both x86 and PowerPC? I would guess so, since its based on Debian...

Debian supports ALOT more than just x86 and PPC.

Alpha, Arm, HPPA, i386, IA64, AMD64, m68k, Mips, PPC, S390, Sparc

    • AFAIK you shouldn't be getting a consent popup at all from Canada, so I think it is to do with a VPN or private/secure DNS.
    • From what I see it's only for Insider - preview builds. Not for everybody. So...
    • Of course, all of that sounds great on paper... No it doesn't!
