WACO, Texas (AP) -- A pastor performing a baptism was electrocuted inside his church Sunday morning when he adjusted a nearby microphone while standing in water, a church employee said.

The Rev. Kyle Lake, 33, was stepping into the baptistery as he reached out for the microphone, which produced an electric shock, said University Baptist Church community pastor Ben Dudley.

Water in a baptistery usually reaches above the waist, said Byron Weathersbee, interim university chaplain at Baylor University.

Lake was pronounced dead at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, nursing supervisor Pat Mahl said. The woman being baptized apparently had not stepped into the water and was not seriously injured.

Pastors at University Baptist Church routinely use a microphone during baptisms, said Jamie Dudley, the wife of Ben Dudley and a business administrator at the church.

"He was grabbing the microphone so everyone could hear," she said. "It's the only way you can be loud enough."

Yes.  It's all funny isn't it.

Actually, it's quite sad.  When I was baptized in '01 I had a mic ... I didn't adjust it as I didn't want everyone to hear me... but it's not a joke when a person dies, and I don't see how some of you can think it is... asking for  video's and such.  Disgusting.: :

Some people on here are just sick and extremely disrespectful. A person died, lay off the jokes. This isn't the jokes forums.

Now back to the thread... I never knew people got baptised fully grown. I thought they get baptised as a baby. When I was a baby, I got baptised and just got dunked once or twice in this little tub of water made for babies and that's it.

looks like he got his ass smote

I laughed at a joke, yes and I was wrong for that. But come on, if we all were to morn over every death in the world, then we'd never be able to smile. Sometimes to get through life, with death all around us, we have make a joke---God forbid.

Some religions baptise babies. Some Protestants and other faiths take the Bible more literally and see baptism as an affirmation of their faith in Christ.

So it would be impossible to baptise a baby seeing as how they are not old enough to even be self-conscious, let alone accept Christ as their saviour.

Dipping, sprinkling the forehead, and full immersion are also used by various faiths. I was fully immersed in in a river when in my early 20's.

as a former Convention Baptist and now an Evangelical Missionary we use FULL BODY EMERSION Baptisim. The most recent baptisim I was at, happened in the Lake. Very ... chilly.

But to answer the other question about being baptized as a child ...

A lot of religons belive it's a "baptisim" when your a child. Myself, I belive that as a baby you are 'dedicated' to the Lord, and the church agrees to help raise you in a Christian manner. When you are older (I've seen as young as 8 and as old as 98) you have to make a concious decision to be baptized and let Jesus into your heart. This is coming from my own Christian life and what I've learned at church.
