[Guide] Minimal Windows

Recommended Posts

For the basic options in MSN Messenger you only need 3 files:

msnmsgr.exe, msglang.dll and msidcrl.dll

psmsong.dll for example is for the 'Now playing' option, which is not needed if you dont use it.

So all other files in the folder can be deleted

Suggestions:

replace VLC with MPUI or MediaPlayerClassic.

for cd burning try Small CD Writer or Sateira CD&DVD Burner ($).

I see you have acronis installed, you can use most functions with just the bootable media.

Take a screenshot of your program files folder with a program that can show the folder sizes such as explorerxp.

This guide will be on hold untill further notice. For my new Graphic Design (Visual Comunications for you, my american friends) semester I needed to install many heavy apps like InDesign. Right now my Program Files folder is at 2 gbs :(

But Still I am going to update the guide with the users suggestions. So stay tuned.

Um, okay. Too much time on your hands. Partitions were invented for a reason.

Slipstream an install will all the functionality you need, and burn it to a bootable dvd.

Store your files on another partition, and backup whenever you feel like without comprimising your install.

I get the whole need for portability/compatibility thing, but what application is useful that doesn't support standard(ish) formats. This could turn into another 4k challenge or something.

With that said, many packages can be run almost entirely from DVD by default or with valid additions to environment variables that can be scripted via autorun. Anyone wanna know more, or am I just rambling off the topic?

Try treesize pro for finding where your disk usage probs are; it does cost money, but you can try it for free as long as you like, it's not crippled, and there are no nags (just the text "unregistered" after the rest on the titlebar.

JAM Software - TreeSize Professional - Hard Disk Space Manager that shows folder size and many more statistics

Is there a way to get "My Computer" to load faster, that takes me atleast 5-7 seconds of the flashlight trying to load it.help?

It takes long because it needs to load all the files on the CD/DVD/Disk/USB readers. It'll load faster if you disable them, but I don't believe you'd like doing it

    • I don't get this David. Can you explain it please.
    • Microsoft is busy. Lots of changes to be released imminently for Windows server or soon. Also, lots happening for next version as well. Third party virus scanning software is being moved out of Kernel mode to avoid repeat of Crowdstrike incident. Windows Protected Mode and Windows Ready Print no longer require third party print drivers to be installed. New storage stack being developed. New NVME drivers now available for Windows Server 2025 to improve local NVME drive performance by 60+ percent. NVME-Of of fabric being worked on for next release to improve network access to NVME drives. ReFs (next file system) now has ability to boot and will become default file system in next release of Windows Server. ReFs improves on NTFS in several areas including resiliency and reliability and scalability. New update stack is being worked on to unify Windows updates, and updates for drivers and first party/3rd party application software. A stricter and more robust third-party driver certification program (ODI) is being worked on to improve performance, thermals, battery life, and reliability on modern Windows hardware by tightening how OEMs and IHVs (Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, etc.) build and ship drivers. There is a tone more but too numerous to mention.
    • Now disable that stupid OneDrive backup request when Windows starts please. So unbelievably frustrating to only have “remind me later” instead of “no and never ask me again”
    • Hello, The Media Creation Tool is still at v10.0.26100.7019 from October 2025. Just looks like the backend has been updated. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Since they open sourced the calculator in Win 10/11 it is much better and can do a lot, I love it.
