[Guide] Minimal Windows

Recommended Posts

surprised to see this still going... been tinkering around with nlite and vmware, because i don't feel like breaking my daily windows install... but this seems stable and usable so far. might toss it on my 2nd laptop and see how it goes.

but when i say usable, i mean for all the things i do with a laptop, which is web/email/p2p/im and the occasional movie viewing. things like gaming, audio/video storage, or anything really crazy gets done on a tower. laptops are meant to be simple and clean, dagnabbit!

as for how to do it... hmm... i just chopped out pretty much anything that wasn't related to networking. the install disk for this setup is 140MB, which could be even smaller if i were a little more adventurous.

* I am going to replace all the icons in shell32.dll and explorer.exe with smaller and simplier icons (This is totally a personal preference. I am still a fan of the old pixel art icons used before xP implemented alpha transparency)

Why stop there? You could probably get rid of most of the .bmps and .avis in most .dlls and .exes (as long as you removed all calls made to a particular resource). Not sure how much space this would save, but I would think it would be comparable to redoing the .icos.
