Mobile Phone Virus Hoax

Recommended Posts

If this has been posted before, nevermind, it needs to be said again. Mods, it may be worth putting this on the front page, given that we almost all have mobile phones. (Sorry, I couldnt decide between General, Internet Security, or Mobile devices!)

AVERT HOAX Notice!!

McAfee AVERT Labs would like to inform you of an email HOAX.

This email message is just a HOAX, currently we know of no call that the user will receive about the HOAX as the initial email states. AVERT has not received any report of a user's mobile phone being rendered unusable for receiving the call.

We are advising users who receive the email to delete it and DO NOT pass it on as this is how an email HOAX propagates.

Below is the actual text from the message that may be received via email.

"Recently, I had received a email from brother & sister at Hong Kong.

Attention to all mobile phone user. This is not a joke. This is an early warning! If you receive a phone call and your mobile phone displays ACE-? on the screen (for most of digital mobile phones with function to display in-coming call telephone number) DO NOT ANSWER THE CALL - END THE CALL IMMEDIATELY OTHERWISE YOUR PHONE WILL BE INFECTED BY VIRUS.

This virus will erase all IMIE and IMSI information from both your phone

and your SIM card, which will make disable your phone connection with the

telephone network. You will have to buy a new phone. This information has been confirmed by both Motorola and Nokia. There are over 3 millions mobile phones being infected by this virus in USA now. You can also check this news in the CNN web site.

Please forward this information to all your family & friends who have digital mobile phones.

Again, if you receive this email delete it and DO NOT pass it on."
