Christmas is near and you can expect a cool gift from Santa (Google) this time. Google is planning to launch PCs for markets in India and China. According to the report by India’s leading newspaper, Hindustan Times, (Report not available online) Google will be launching the PCs with California based Wyse technology.

The PCs won’t have CPU; they will be bundled with Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor. The PC will connect to the hosted system on their server and the remote OS will manage storage and functioning of the PC. This will keep PC away from virus and also provide secure solution for storage of the user data.

The PC will run on software created by Google; hardware and other technicalities will be managed by Wyse technology.

The PCs will be available for Rs. 9,000 (INR) i.e. approximately $200

ummm... :huh: perhaps, could just be a rumor, wont believe it till its on Neowin lol, but it is another step in world domination!

Actually I just read it in the newspaper and the article is in my hand...

Their website does not show today's content online so they will put it tomorrow on their site..

Umm, there would have to be some kind of CPU. Are they suggesting it's a thin client system? (like those that use WinCE and run terminal services clients?)

That's nothing new really, but just a new way of using them. Could be interesting, in the off chance that it ends up being true.

I guess this announcement on Wyse press release will also put some lights on it: http://www.wyse.com/about/news/pr/2005/1102_Software.asp

The annoucement doesnt say that they have made application for google but google can definitely use the same thing :)

The article says that it has no CPU, but Dumb Terminals would be so expensive on the server-side to run.

I think that it will have a CPU -- Not an Athlon or a Pentium -- but possibly MIPS CPU with the Firmware/OS stored on Flash Memory/EEPROM, like what is commonly found in Embedded Devices (like Routers) and PDAs.

If they do have an embedded MIPS CPU, then the possibility of hacking Linux onto it is there. Would make a good Linux Router or Webserver.

I wonder if you saw a comic, Hambone, in Business Standard some days back. The main character says: "No, I don't want a cheap PC. I just want a expensive PC that does not cost much."

IMO, if people do buy it, it will be only on a temporary basis. A computer is seen by many as a status symbol, so they are bound to upgrade to something more mainstream.

Basiclly there will be CPU but can be like chip like others said...things will be mainly controlled by the remotely hosted OS but the only thing wonders me is..why they decided to launch it in India...here in India net connection is very costly and many people don't even have 256kbps line..so I feel in the start it might not do well...

Edit: Or on the other thought..it can be somehting like SSH client which just connects to the server like putty and rest of the things are managed by them...

India network infrastructure is terrible. No way an OS can run from a central system in India.

The best you can achieve is a slow DOS prompt.

May be South Korea but certainly not India.

I agree, but fully with the DOS part. The main problem is the electricity supply. Just yesterday, the supply was switched off about 4 times in the 4 hours. And that's in a Tier-1 city. I have a UPS supply, its not a big issue, atleast for me. But they'll need a really good hard disk! Oh wait a minute, they don't have a hard disk.
