Yes, that forum is indeed for debating politics, religion, war, etc. but not flaming. Besides, there was already another thread that you could express your thoughts of religion on. Maybe the mod who closed the thread was being a little paranoid, but it was already heading towards a flame fest as of then IMO.

I like those kind of threads but not when they turn or are about to turn into an insult free-for-all.

If everything gets closed on a glimpse of a possible flame war, then you can already close the OS forums, and partly the gendisc too then.

I know the mods have to deal with a lot of people here, but closing something without an incident is not good. The other still open religious thread we argued several pages w/o any flaming. So what.

From Merriam-Webster

Debate:

a contention by words or arguments for a regulated discussion of a proposition between two matched sides

I think that's applicable here. Quite frankly, what goes on at Neowin isn't half as bad as televised debates, and if you can't handle someone mocking your beliefs/ideas, you shouldn't be involved with one in the first place. I've had teachers who have done nothing but critizice students for a reason, they try and prove everything the student believes is wrong so that the student will defend what they believe in. A couple of good knockings on someones foundations is a good way to make sure their solid.

But whatever. I'll go along with the mods. The 3 more or less equal topics was a bit...much. And like the definition says, it is "regulated".

No offense, but sometimes people want to discuss such topics like religion, and it's not fair to close them everytime because you see a flamebait. If you don't wanna peeps start such topics again, please add No Religion to the community rules and remove Religion from RL Issues forum description.

The issue is not about discussing religion within the forums, but how such a topic is discussed.

A thread that demands proof for someone's beliefs is asking to start a flame war. It has always happened this way in the past, and after just a few posts it was obvious that the thread I closed was also headed in that direction.

Threads that vear off-topic, such as the recently closed "What do you believe and why?" thread, basically serve no purpose other than to raise post count. Not to mention it serves as a dissappointment to guests on our boards, who may click a link on a specific subject only to end up reading about people sticking their genitals in household electronics.

If you dislike the way I or any other moderator executes our responsibilities to the Neowin boards, you are always free to take it up with any of the Neowin staff via PM or email.

Hmm...well EVERY topic I've posted in in the Real World Issues forum has been closed, so maybe there's a connection there ;)

Course, even if a topic gets closed, something gets said. Some point is made, no matter how inane. Or, as the case may be, insane (toaster boy).

I guess that you don't understand the concept of debait. :) If everyone agreed on all topics it would be quite boring. There is a big difference between a heated debate and a so-called flamewar. Learn the difference and don't jump the gun so quickly. If you can't properly defend your beliefs then they aren't worth having.

    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
