New Trolling law passed

Recommended Posts

The basis of the law is to prevent people with the intent to inflict harm (physical) on another person from stalking them over the internet. Ok, haha we all get the joke now about "annoying", but this law does have real world value. It means that if I get screwed out of $100 and I want to kick some guys ass, I can't stalk him/make threats/etc. with the intent to do harm (physical) without disclosing who I am. At least Joe Schmo whos ass could get kicked knows who he is dealing with. I've never been the target of internet stalking, but one of the first kids I met in college got detained and questioned for pretending to stalk a girl from his high school. I don't take this as the final form this law will take after amendments, but it is a good concept.

And how exactly do they plan to enforce this law? Do they have cops monitoring the internet now

They wont. It will be come like the countless other laws that exist only to humor people when others bring it up. I seriously doubt it will enforced.

However, only bullying from kids is a huge issue right now, and this law may be one of the pieces needed to help crack down on that.

I think people are taking this over the top. The spirit of the law is clearly to stop internet stalking. The definition of internet harassment is just as open as normal/in-person/mail harassment, just a different medium. The point is, that mostly everyone agrees that making anonymous, unsolicited, harassing calls/letters is wrong, so why should it be different on the internet?

It's not freedom of speech when you're intruding on others' rights.

Anyways, how on earth do they think they're going to enforce this?

operator: 911, What is your emergency?

me: sexybitch69_5134 won't leave me alone!

operator: Excuse me sir?

me: she keeps asking me to view her "webcam" but it is just a porno site

operator: ...

/edit

I think we are thinking on a small scale. This isn't to target forum trools most likely, but rather large spam companies that send massive amount of e-mails and such.

Oh wow... I never thought such a law would exist.

I can imagine the lawsuits now...

But this also raises the question: Who the hell are running the country?

One word: idiots.

Ah hell, name a government in this world that's completely honest and all good on everything. Guess there aren't any. :pinch:

Does nobody read or do simple research anymore? Why are news agencies allowed to publish crap and get away with it?

This is the text of HR.3402, the bill in question. Sec 113 says no such thing. This whole stupid article is a hoax and destined to find its way to Snopes.com someday.

Here's the original law amended by section 113, which, by the way, already prohibited annoying telephone calls/letters/faxes but apparently people think that OMFG NOT MY EMAIL I SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO STALK BY EMAIL THAT'S WAY DIFFERENT THAN A PHONE CALL OR LETTER OR FAX.

Boy that is a good use of taxpayers money.

If I was an American, I would be ****ed.

Well, i am an american and i am ****ed. I would think the our government would have better things to do than to enact silly laws like this that are hardly enforceable.
