Today my newest toy arrived, the 20" iMac Core Duo.

I am loving it so far, the universal binary apps are indeed way fast as we have been told. Apps under Rosetta are usable but it's not anything like the native ones.

Having owned a Mac in the past, the switch to OS X was not a huge surprise for me, but I am still looking for ways to do things that were so easy in Windows (thumbnails in finder? right click -> set as wallpaper?).

Just waiting for that hack to get XP installed on here now...

Now, a question I have for you guys is this - can I get the display to be blanked when the machine is being accessed via vnc? I've tried the built in server and osxvnc, and I can't seem to do it?

Here are a couple of pics, sorry for the poor quality :D

sweet, how much did you pay for that?

It's the standard one on the store, ?1229

Can we get some benchmarks for it please?

Tell me what I need to do please, I know nothing about Mac benchmarks:DD

nice, but why does the back of the stand look like that? plastic or something?

Yeah I took the pic before I removed the cover.

One thing I still don't understand. Why are people trying hard to get XP on the Mac system?

My Opinion

1.) It's cheaper to build your own custom system with higher specs;

2.) The hardware will be outdated very quickly and (1) seems like a cheaper option to upgrade;

3.) If I buy a mac (I will one day), then it will be exclusively for the Operating System (Mac 'greater than' XP);

4.) It's annoying that Mac OS X x86 isn't available, which is why the Mac Mini (Intel) system is what I'm looking for.

P.S.

That's a nice iMac you have their (20" too) :)

Go here and download Xbench - run it - copy and paste the results and post!

Here you go :)

Thanks guys, yeah I do need to clean the desk a lot, once every couple of days it seems. Not that much of a biggie though :p

I don't need to have XP running on here, I have a machine running x64 too. It would be nice to not need to turn it on when I need a specific Windows app though :)

nice purchase Simon, I am hopefully gonna sell my G4 Dual 800 & ACD20" this week so that i can buy one.

could you let us know what it's like at loading an office app or loading UNISON just some idea how quick it is in Rosetta

something that i could compare to my current Mac so i know its worth the money ? TIA

I am running an iMac G5.....my test results were a lot higher than the intel one...

    • Yeah, this is absolutely nothing new and EA have done it before. Burnout Paradise, released in 2008, had dynamic advertising billboards that were updated via the internet and targeted people based on location and what EA knew about them from their profile. It was particularly notable for the fact that the Obama presidential campaign ran ads in the game, in an attempt to reach a younger audience who didn't watch broadcast TV any more. It was by no means the first though. Battlefield 2142 from 2006 had the same thing. In fact, Neowin wrote a story about it back then. https://www.neowin.net/news/ba...-in-game-ads-clarification/
    • This is obviously aimed at the education where Apple has lost so much ground to Chromebooks in the last few years, but unless they come up with a comparable management system for education why would anyone switch back?
    • Here's how we arrived at that claim: Note that this is just Play Store downloads. The app is also available on the Galaxy App Store
    • Google Play states the app had more than 50 million downloads. What other metric do you suggest should be used?
    • MSN defined our generation in some ways, kind of like Snapchat and TikTok have done for future generations. I have great memories of the MSN era in the late 90s / early 2000s. In the UK everyone seemed to come home from School and go on MSN for the evening. We didn't really have mobile phones then, so other than going and knocking on your friends door it was a totally new way of interacting with people. I also loved how I could talk to people I’d met playing online games from around the world. Inviting people to NetMeeting and messing about with the shared white board and webcams was pretty fun, even if webcams only ran at a couple of fps over dial-up. All the random things you could do with MsgPlus! were really fun - I suspect that made a few people jump with /shello randomly blasting Mr Hankey out their speakers! Maybe I’m just nostalgic, however I do feel the internet and computers were more fun back then.
