I've been noticing more math threads being posted on neowin, so i have an idea for a feature that neowin members can benefit from it's called LaTeX math typsetting and is a feature for sites that enable math caclulation, equations, etc to be displayed more properly, i know the neowin staff have a lot more higher priorities so i'm not expecting them to take this into immediate consideration, even if the support for this is warranted.

Edit: can a mod add a poll to this, i tried but ever since the upgrade to neowin this seems to be impossible for me to do.

I would like to see it (for the science section mostly), and with programs like dvi2png (or something like that), the server can turn the TeX into dvi, then produce a PNG out of it for the browsers to display, and TeX can also be extended to other things as well (seen it do music, chemical, certain other physics related formats, and chess game moves)

Update: Added a Poll at ripgut's request.

Alright. You are gonna have to show me how you did that. I couldn't find it for the life of me. I are fired.

lol

all i did was make a new post (last line of that post, got bundled) and i added the poll in then

apparently it doesn't show up if your editing the first post (what Colin tried)

Edit: i just tried, i see all the poll options in the first post

If you edit the first post when there is no poll, you get no option to add a poll

if you add areply to the end of the thread you get the ability to add a poll (staff only ;) )

if you edit the first post when there is an existing poll you get the poll options (because there is a poll there already)

Voted yay btw :p

LaTeX is a professional-grade general typesetting system that centers around very pleasing mathematical presentation. Mathematical expressions are written in a markup style somewhat similar to HTML.

To include a LaTeX graphic, simply include your LaTeX code within the tags [ tex ] [ / tex ] or [ latex ] [ /latex ] (they are equivalent).

Here's some examples:

Pfft. Stoopid IPB changing how polls can be added from 1.3

Thanks for shedding light on this, fellas.

LaTeX does hammer the server a bit though. Don't know if it would be suitable for a computing forum anyways.

And that's why his reasoning for it was because of the influx of more math-related threads on the forum ;)

I've used LaTeX before and I liked it. Pretty cool stuff that you can do with it. In fact, I did all the homework for my last semester math class with LaTeX on my iBook :)

Would be nice to see a separate math/science section or a separate section for university / higher education section ... not related to programming or graphics (since these are 'potential' areas of study with their own section).

I'm just happy that there's a science section period.

Well, computers and math do go hand in hand. Then again, most of the math posts are homework questions (and usually fairly easy questions, not the type needed to describe complex stuff about computers).

I don't think it will impact the servers very much. Usually, the rendered LaTeX will be cached (the mediawiki plugins do this) and so the rendering will be done once when the post is submitted. I say yay.

One of the core libraries (cURL) has been updated to address vulnerabilities and a nasty linker error that was causing the need for a dedicated patch which could now be eliminated.
