Allan
Turin, Italy ? Canada got the win but it was the losing Italians who got more out of the 16-0 thrashing. While the Canadian women's hockey team was heavily favoured in its opening game against the Italians at the Winter Olympics on Saturday, it was the most lopsided score in the sport's short history in the Games. The previous high was Canada's 13-0 win over host Japan in 1998 when women's hockey made its Olympic debut. For Canada, the host Italians were practice fodder for tougher competition to come later as the defending champions take on Russia on Sunday (CBC, 10:30 a.m. ET). For the Medal Standings, see Olympic Website. Also, please feel free mods, to change title as the thread progresses, or a new story comes out. I'm thinking once a day, change it to the "Big story" ... wether it's Gold Medal won, or a Dope bust ... And please, don't flame me because I love my Canadian Women and their ASS KICKING they gave today. TheNay
Looks like Russia is doing just as bad, its 7-0 end of first period, at this rate it'll be 21-0.. lol
Fred Derf Veteran Posted February 12, 2006 Veteran Share Posted February 12, 2006 (edited) The Canadian women are currently leading the Russian women 9-0 as we go into the 3rd period. Russia is obviously a stronger team than Italy although they did lose 3-1 to Sweden in their first game. Edit: The final score was 12-0 for Canada. Canada has thus outscored their opponents, so far, 28 to nothing. Edited February 12, 2006 by fred666

R-Flex
I love how CBC puts it: "Canada needs to get more goals for so they can get home ice advantage if they face the Americans in the final." How diplomatic!

brotherrabbit
The answer to this situation is: Canada and USA both have about 10 times more the amount of funding / training then any other country in the world. Of course they will compete.
Tran
Here are the (rough) facts: there are about 130,000 women who play competitive hockey in the world. Of this number, 65,000 are Canadian and 51,000 are American. It comes to no surprise that Canada's doing this well. I'll wait for the Gold medal match with the US. W1cked-J
Anyone else find it more fun to watch womens hockey than mens? Yep!! When I turned on Universal HD channel the other day there was hockey on and it took me 10 min to realize it was the womens teams!! Man can they play and play well. Great entertainment!! Tran
It'll be more entertaining when it's the Canada vs. US game. Right now there's not a team that'll match up against them in their group.
bigbluepride35
Anyone else find it more fun to watch womens hockey than mens? Um except for when the U.S. plays Canda not really. At least in the men's game there's more parity. In the women's it has been and will be again this year basically cakewalks for the U.S. and Canada until they face each other for the gold. That's not entertaining lol. In the men's there's a good 3-4 teams who can be considered gold contenders (personally I don't think the U.S. is even in for a bronze this year considering their three goalies have practically NO international experience lol). During one of the Saturday women's games they said in international competitions the U.S. and Canadian women teams have NEVER lost a game to any country aside from each other  . So yeah until that gold medal game I don't think the women's games will be worth watching. WIth the men, anything can happen.
yisman
Um except for when the U.S. plays Canda not really. At least in the men's game there's more parity. In the women's it has been and will be again this year basically cakewalks for the U.S. and Canada until they face each other for the gold. Exactly. Women's sports are not quite as popular worldwide as they are in Canada and the USA. Not as many women play sports. That leads to unbalanced playing fields in all kinds of female sports. See college basketball, for a different example. The Canada and USA women's hockey teams have dominated for years, and they will continue to do so. The other teams don't have much of a chance, usually.
Tran
I'm waiting for the day when the other teams get better. Not only is it better to watch, it's also better for the players. Tough competition - not just the United States - for Canada will improve players on both teams.
